About Araquanid

The bubble of water covering its head is Araquanid’s most obvious physical feature. It does not use it as a simple ornament: it traps prey inside, drowns them and then savours them at its leisure. It also stores whatever it considers valuable there, to the point of trying to trap its Trainer if they let their guard down.

Its behaviour combines aggression and care. It delivers headbutts with the bubble and can finish off small Pokémon, but it protects members of its species that it finds weak or vulnerable. It even shelters small Dewpider, which feed on the remains of its prey inside the water chamber.

The design is based on a water spider, with a reinterpretation of the diving bell spider’s air bubble: here, it contains water and is carried outside the surface. Its long legs also resemble those of sea spiders. It is Dewpider’s evolution and retains its Water and Bug types. It evolves when it reaches level 22.

Araquanid in depth

A spider that turns the logic of water on its head

Araquanid’s design takes inspiration from the diving bell spider, which carries a bubble of air to breathe underwater. The Alolan creature turns that idea around: its bubble contains water and also allows it to function outside the water. The slender legs point to sea spiders, while the shape of its head and its expression recall an almost human-looking spider. The green colour fits wetland vegetation and the image of an animal that lives among water and plants.

The English name combines “arachnid” and “aqua”. The Japanese name, オニシズクモ (Onishizukumo), combines references to a spider called onigumo, the idea of a demon and drops of water, while also linking it to Dewpider’s Japanese name.

From Dewpider to the protective bubble

The evolutionary line tells a fairly specific story. Dewpider is small and depends on its bubble to breathe; when it evolves, that same structure becomes a tool for hunting, storage and protection. Pokédex entries add an unusual social side: it does not just capture prey, it also gathers young Dewpider and lets them feed on the remains left inside the bubble.

Araquanid first appeared in Generation VII and kept its types, Water Bubble ability and role as a Water-type attacker in later generations. Its learnset has changed over time: in Generation VII, it obtained moves such as Spider Web and Mirror Coat through that generation’s learnset, while in Scarlet and Violet it follows a different progression, with Water Gun, Infestation, Lunge and Liquidation learned at specific levels. The species also has a Totem Form distinct from the regular one.

Comparing it with other spiders

Compared with Ariados, Araquanid drops the Poison-based approach and prioritises Water, special bulk and power under Water Bubble. Compared with Masquerain, it shares its base stat total and Bug typing, but occupies a much slower, specially bulky role. Masquerain aims for Speed and aerial support; Araquanid switches in more comfortably against Water-, Ground-, Ice- or Fighting-type attacks and threatens with a boosted Water-type attack.

How to make the most of its slow turns

In battle, it is best saved for switch-ins it can withstand rather than throwing it into random physical hits. Sticky Web changes the pace of the field and partly offsets its 42 Speed. After that, Liquidation forces direct damage and Leech Life restores HP against targets vulnerable to Bug. Surf provides a useful special alternative when the opponent has high physical Defense.

Water Bubble lets it ignore burns and reduces the danger of Fire-type attacks, but it does not fix its weaknesses to Electric, Flying and Rock. Fast Pokémon of these types, physical attackers and teams that keep entry hazards active greatly limit how long it lasts. For that reason, it works best when its teammates remove hazards and take advantage of the Speed drop caused by Sticky Web.
