Archen in depth
A bird before flight
Archen's design is based on Archaeopteryx, a prehistoric animal with dinosaur and bird features. The Japanese name アーケン and the English name Archen are derived from “Archaeopteryx” and also evoke the Archean eon, an appropriate reference for a species recovered from a fossil. The idea is not limited to its appearance: its inability to fly and its movement between branches have been part of the concept since its Pokédex entries.
Its category, the First Bird Pokémon, sums up this intermediate position. It is not a modern bird with fully functional wings, but neither is it an ordinary terrestrial reptile. The feathers, claws and ancient-looking snout make that transition visible without turning it into a realistic replica of the fossil.
A story tied to Unova
Archen debuted in Generation V as one of Unova's Fossils. Since then, it has retained its Rock and Flying typing, the ability Defeatist and its evolution into Archeops upon reaching level 37. In Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, the entries emphasise that it cannot fly, although it can jump very well, and that it lives among the treetops.
Its movepool was also expanded with tutor moves such as Meteor Beam, Lash Out and Dual Wingbeat. The first lets it take advantage of its Special Attack of 74, although its Attack of 112 remains the natural way to build it. The concept has changed little: the species remains a living fossil whose physical flaw defines its behaviour.
Power with an awkward condition
The most useful comparison is with other Rock-type Fossil Pokémon. Tirtouga takes physical hits better, while Archen is faster and threatens from the first turn. That Speed is not enough to make up for its defenses of 45 and its HP of 55. Against Pokémon that can hit it with Water, Ice, Steel, Rock or Electric attacks, a poorly judged switch usually leaves it in the range where Defeatist reduces its offensive power.
In Little Cup, the practical way to use it is to protect its HP. U-turn lets it leave after attacking, while Rock Slide gives it a reliable Rock-type attack for pressuring Flying-type Pokémon. Acrobatics becomes more valuable once Archen is no longer holding an item, but using it that way means accepting that it gives up one of the few aids available for keeping it away from Defeatist. Earthquake covers Steel-type Pokémon and stops them from resisting its main attacks without an answer.
How it fits into a game
It is best brought in through a safe switch, after a teammate forces the opponent out or with U-turn from another Pokémon. It should not switch repeatedly into Stealth Rock: its Rock weakness turns every switch into a countdown towards Defeatist. Allies that remove hazards from the field and can answer Water- or Electric-type attacks give it more opportunities to attack.
It can also provide Stealth Rock or Defog, but its defenses do not allow it to perform those roles for long. Its best moment comes when the opponents are already weakened and its Attack of 112 can close out an exchange before its own HP becomes the main problem.
