Arctibax in depth
A sail turned into a blade
The design starts with a theropod dinosaur featuring a very pronounced dorsal structure. The clearest reference is Spinosaurus, although it also fits Concavenator, a dinosaur whose fossils were discovered in Spain and which had a crest on its back. The spikes on its arms and rear fin transfer those traits to a creature built for the cold. Ice is not just decoration here: Arctibax forms it around its face and concentrates it along its back until it becomes a weapon.
The English name combines “arctic”, referring to the cold, with “back” and “axe”, alluding to its back and the blade it carries on it. The Japanese name, Segohru, comes from words associated with the back and freezing. The Spanish translation preserves the construction of the English name.
A physical attacker still taking shape
Its Attack of 95 is the stat that defines its battles, while its 90 HP lets it take a hit before striking back. Its 66 Defense and 65 Special Defense are unremarkable, and its 62 Speed is not enough to dictate the pace. Its 45 Special Attack almost completely rules out sets built around Ice Beam, Blizzard, or Dragon Pulse, although those moves can be useful during the story if there are no better physical alternatives.
The simplest approach is to use an Ice-type move, such as Icicle Spear or Ice Fang, together with a Dragon-type move. Crunch completes the coverage, and Swords Dance turns free turns against passive opponents into a real threat. Thermal Exchange rewards switching into Fire-type moves, but it does not turn Arctibax into a sturdy Pokémon: Fighting, Rock, Steel, Dragon, and Fairy still hit it super effectively.
The stage that sets up Baxcalibur
Frigibax is small and still lacks the offensive bulk of its evolutions. Arctibax makes the visual leap towards a more aggressive silhouette: its dorsal fin already looks like a sword, and its legs have the prominence needed to perform the somersaulting attack described in the Pokédex. Baxcalibur takes the same idea to a larger scale, making the middle stage an armed but incomplete version of the line.
During the adventure, catching one or evolving a Frigibax lets you use an unusual attacker with two types. Level 35 comes before the final evolution, so Arctibax can cover a large part of the middle and late game. It is best kept away from super effective attacks and used against Water-, Grass-, Electric-, or Fire-type opponents: the first three take reduced damage from its type combination, while the last can activate Thermal Exchange.
A debut with no prior history
Arctibax first appeared in Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet, as part of Generation IX. It has no changes inherited from previous generations and no alternate forms to compare. Its level-up moves also reflect its status as a middle evolution: it learns Dragon Tail at level 1, Ice Fang at level 29, Ice Beam at level 45, and Icicle Spear at level 55, while Dragon Claw is available through TM.
The most distinctive detail in its line is the relationship between its back and the ice. The fin is not a sail, a shell, or a modified tail: it becomes a blade during battle. That transformation explains both Arctibax’s anatomy and the combination of the Dragon and Ice types.
