A bit of a dandy, it spends its free time preening its wings. Its preoccupation with any dirt on its plumage can leave it unable to battle.

About Dartrix

Like Rowlet, Dartrix calls an owl to mind, but its appearance already points towards a bird that turns its plumage into a weapon. The leaves around its face evoke the facial disc of some owls, and the feathers on its wings end in sharp points, making them suitable for throwing at prey and enemies. It also has a vain side: it grooms itself whenever it can, refuses to battle if it fears getting dirty, and may disobey when it does not receive enough attention during grooming.

Its perception stands out as much as its accuracy. It detects presences behind it and targets vital points with feathers it throws like knives. The Grass and Flying combination suits its appearance as a bird covered in leaves, while its Blade Quill Pokémon category sums up its way of attacking.

It occupies the middle stage of its evolutionary line. Rowlet evolves into Dartrix upon reaching level 17, then reaches Decidueye at level 34 in the usual evolution. It is 0.7 m tall, weighs 16 kg and yields 2 HP EVs when defeated.

Dartrix in depth

An owl with leaves on its face

The design is based on an owl, with features close to those of barn owls. That choice fits Alola, whose geographical inspiration is linked to Hawaii: the pueo, an owl associated with grassland areas, can be found there. The leaves around its face resemble the edge of these birds' facial discs, while the tufts on its head look like leaves sprouting from a seed.

The plant concept does not stop at its coloring. Dartrix combines the flight of a bird of prey with the precise throwing of sharp feathers. Its behavior completes the contrast: it cares for its plumage obsessively, but that grooming also keeps its feathers ready for battle.

The name that throws feathers

The Japanese name, Fukuthrow, combines fukurō, “owl”, with throw, “to throw”. The connection is direct: it identifies the animal and describes its method of attack. In Dartrix, the “dart” part refers to a dart, while “Strix” is a genus of owls. The result preserves the idea of a bird that fires projectiles, rather than a creature that relies on its claws to attack.

A line that changes its trade

As the middle stage, Dartrix marks a clear transition from Rowlet. The starter has a rounder, more discreet silhouette; Dartrix adopts an upright stance and the image of a showy bird, with more clearly defined head leaves and facial features. Afterwards, Decidueye takes the concept towards an archer, so the precision of its feathers is already foreshadowed here.

The species first appeared in Generation VII and was not available before then. It kept its Grass and Flying combination in subsequent generations. In Scarlet and Violet, access to some moves changed between the initial release and a later update: Confuse Ray, Night Shade and Light Screen were no longer treated the same way as in the first versions. It is a small detail, but it shows that its movepool has been adjusted over time.

How to get the most out of it without asking too much

In a normal playthrough, it is best to take advantage of its resistances by switching in against Water-, Grass- or Fighting-type attacks and responding with moves of its two types. Leaf Blade offers a reliable physical option once it learns it, while Brave Bird provides much more power at the cost of recoil. Knock Off helps against opponents that depend on their item, while Swords Dance requires finding a safe turn and turns Dartrix into a more serious physical threat.

Long Reach is the more practical Hidden Ability for careful use: it lets it use moves without making contact with the opponent. Overgrow has a more situational effect, because it only improves Grass-type moves when HP is dangerously low, but it can decide an exchange at the end of a battle. The quadruple weakness to Ice means avoiding any matchup in which the opponent can use an Ice-type attack, and its 52 Speed makes Sucker Punch a useful tool for not always being at the mercy of the first hit.
