About Grookey

Introduced in Generation VIII with Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, Grookey is a small green-furred primate that carries a branch on its head and uses it as a drumstick. Its design is based on a monkey, with traits reminiscent of several arboreal primates, and puts music at the centre of its behaviour. When it strikes with its drumstick, it produces sound waves capable of restoring vitality to plant life. Wilted flowers and leaves regain their colour when it plays near them.

It also uses rhythm to battle. Pokédex entries describe how its enthusiasm increases as it speeds up the cadence of its strikes, so the branch is not just decoration: it serves as a tool, instrument and weapon. Its English name combines the idea of rhythm in “groove” with “monkey”, while the Japanese サルノリ links “saru”, monkey, with “nori”, rhythm or enthusiasm.

It is the first stage of its evolutionary line. At level 16 it evolves into Thwackey, which then reaches its final stage at level 35.

Grookey in depth

A monkey that turns branches into rhythm

The visual starting point is a small monkey, with traits reminiscent of arboreal primates and a green palette tied to its affinity with vegetation. The branch running through its hair is not just decoration. In the species concept, it serves as a drumstick, tool and instrument, connecting its animal design with a very specific musical interest.

The English name combines “groove”, related to rhythm, with “monkey”. The Japanese サルノリ does something similar: “saru” means monkey and “nori” refers to rhythm or enthusiasm. The Chimp Pokémon category reduces that inspiration to a direct label, although its appearance does not strictly copy a real chimpanzee.

A line that changes scale

Grookey begins an evolutionary line built around percussion. Its individual branch becomes Thwackey, which carries two drumsticks and adopts a stance more focused on playing, before reaching Rillaboom, whose design develops the idea of a larger percussionist. The progression keeps the link between music and nature, but expands the instrument and the reach of its strikes.

In Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, it appeared as one of Galar’s starter options. It later arrived in Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet as part of the set of species available in that generation. The concept did not need an alternate form to remain recognisable: the branch, rhythm and plant energy already define its silhouette from the first stage.

What it offers during the adventure

Its spread favours a straightforward physical style. Scratch is useful in the opening battles, Branch Poke provides STAB from level 6 and Razor Leaf arrives at level 12 with a clear damage increase. Later on, Knock Off adds utility against opponents that rely on their item, while Slam offers a stronger physical Normal-type option. Wood Hammer, learned at level 32, is its hardest-hitting Grass move, although the recoil limits how often it is worth using.

Overgrow fits that approach well. When Grookey is down to low HP, its Grass attacks gain power and can turn around a battle it was about to lose. Grassy Surge takes a different approach: it activates Grassy Terrain on entry and prepares a team that can take advantage of the terrain. Since its defences are underwhelming, it is best not to leave it in against attacks that exploit its weaknesses or rely on it surviving several turns.

Before the big drum arrives

Compared with other simian-looking starters, such as Chimchar, Grookey stands out as a physical Grass attacker rather than one that relies on the Fire type and a more speed-oriented progression. It also resembles them in its role during the adventure: it starts with simple tools and gains variety as it approaches its evolution.

When training it, it is best to prioritise physical Grass moves and save special moves for specific situations. Giga Drain and Energy Ball are among its Technical Machine options, but its Special Attack is 40, so they are not the main route. U-turn lets it use its Speed to reposition itself, while Protect or Substitute can buy a turn when the opponent threatens to break through its defences.

Its drumstick sums up the entire species: it comes from a branch, is transformed by the energy in its body and ends up bringing plants to life when it keeps the beat.
