Hattrem in depth
A hat made of hair
Hattrem is designed around a witch, particularly the traditional image of the pointed hat and the folklore belief linking a witch's power to her hair. The creature brings that idea into its body: the hat is not a garment, but a mass of hair that it also uses to stand and move around. The shape of the locks also resembles a braided or knotted ponytail, with an appearance reminiscent of certain hair amulets from magical traditions.
The English name contains hat and also refers to tremble. The Japanese Tebrim combines teburi, “hand gesture”, with brim, the edge of a hat. Both readings fit its locks, which function as arms and as a weapon.
The violence of calm
The Serene category describes a paradox. Its aim is not to provoke strong emotions, but to eliminate them immediately, even when they involve happiness. The Pokédex entries do not present this behaviour as a refined technique: it silences whoever is in front of it by striking them. The detail that it can knock out a professional boxer reinforces the contrast between its small body and the physical power of its locks.
This behaviour also explains the transition towards Hatterene, associated with silence and a much larger presence. Hattrem is the middle point of the line: it retains Hatenna's emotional sensitivity, but stops merely reacting to what it perceives and begins to intervene aggressively.
What it offers without evolving
Its practical use appears when it is kept unevolved to take advantage of Eviolite. Magic Bounce turns status moves and hazards aimed at it into a risk for whoever uses them. It should be brought in against predictable hazard setters, not against attackers capable of hitting its weaknesses. A correct switch-in can send a hazard back to the opponent's side; a forced switch-in against a Dark-, Ghost- or Bug-type attack usually leaves it losing too much health.
Calm Mind lets it gain Special Attack and Special Defense if it finds a free turn. Psychic is its main attack for power and STAB, while Giga Drain covers vulnerable types and helps restore health. Thunder Wave provides Speed control, but Hattrem does not learn the move by levelling up, so it has to be taught via TM.
In teams of unevolved species, it works better as a defensive and deterrent piece than as an attacker. It can also provide support with Light Screen, Reflect, Heal Pulse or Healing Wish. The combination of Magic Bounce and support options is what gives it a niche of its own; its offensive figures are not enough to justify using it on their own.
Its place in Galar and Paldea
Hattrem debuted in the eighth generation alongside its evolutionary line and returned in Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet. It has no alternate forms: its only recorded form is the standard one. Its line shares an evolutionary structure with Morgrem: a first evolution at level 32 and another at level 42, as well as a complete separation by sex, since Hattrem's line consists exclusively of females.
The stat distribution makes the species' purpose clear. Its Special Attack of 86 is its best figure, followed by Special Defense at 73 and Defense at 65. Its HP of 57 does not let it sustain prolonged exchanges without support, and its Speed of 49 means it has to accept that it will almost always act second. Hattrem does not win battles through brute force. When it does win, it is because the opponent has to think twice about whether using a status move is worth it in front of a Pokémon that can reflect it back.
