Mothim in depth
A moth with thieving habits
Mothim is based on an adult moth, with features of hawk moths that fly at night and visit flowers. Its fondness for honey adds a reference to species capable of entering beehives. The Japanese page calls it ガーメイル, Gamale: the name combines 蛾, “moth”, with “male”, and also plays on gameru, a verb related to stealing or taking something. The English name combines moth with him, a direct reference to the fact that this evolution corresponds to males.
The connection with honey theft appears twice in the Pokédex. One entry says that it steals the honey collected by Combee; another specifies that it does so at night, while the Pokémon in the hive are asleep. This is not a relationship based on friendship or cooperation. Its elegant design hides fairly opportunistic behaviour.
Burmy’s male branch
Mothim debuted in Generation IV as the exclusive evolution of male Burmy. The gender split completely changes the outcome of the evolution: a female Burmy cannot become this species, even after reaching the required level. This rule gives the contrast with Wormadam a clear purpose and prevents the two evolutions from being interchangeable variants of the same specimen.
Compared with Wormadam, Mothim leaves behind the cloak-and-cocoon appearance in favour of broad wings and a body clearly built for flight. It also shares Burmy’s humble origins, but its stats are geared towards attacking: 94 Attack and 94 Special Attack compared with defenses of 50 on both sides.
Power with little room for error
Tinted Lens is the Ability that makes it worth trying as a special attacker. By doubling the damage of moves that aren’t very effective, it allows Bug Buzz and Air Slash to remain threats against targets that would normally resist one of those types. Psychic broadens its coverage and punishes opponents that switch in expecting only Bug- or Flying-type attacks.
The problem is that it needs to switch in without taking serious damage. The Bug/Flying combination gives it an immunity to Ground and good resistances to Grass, Fighting and Bug, but its extreme weakness to Rock limits its opportunities to switch. Its 66 Speed also isn’t enough to make up for defenses of 50. In a playthrough, the most practical approach is to send it out against an opponent that is already in a bad position and attack immediately; in demanding battles, it needs support to switch in and out without being left exposed.
A secondary presence in battle
Older-generation competitive analyses have treated it as a niche option, with Tinted Lens as its main selling point. They have also noted that its combination of attacks is difficult to resist completely, but that advantage does not erase its problems with Speed, durability and weakness to Rock. Opponents that survive its first attack can usually knock it out or force it to switch.
Its competitive history also reflects the evolution of the metagame. In later generations, it gained access to tools that improved its offensive ability, but the species continued to compete with Bug- and Flying-type attackers that were faster, bulkier or more versatile. In Legends: Arceus, its available movepool focuses on Struggle Bug, Gust, Confusion, Silver Wind, Air Slash, Psychic and Bug Buzz, so its role is clearer: an offensive special attacker for progressing through the game, not a defensive Pokémon or a form of battlefield control.
The most peculiar detail is still outside battle. Mothim is not obtained by looking for a rare form of Burmy or by using an item: the specimen simply has to be male and reach level 20. The same species that raids beehives therefore appears as the result of a gender check during evolution.
