About Panpour

0.6 m tall and weighing 13.5 kg, Panpour stores a reserve of nutritious water in the tuft on top of its head. It expels the water through its tail to water plants, making them grow very large. It also uses it to keep itself moist, which fits its preference for environments near water.

Its appearance combines a small monkey with a fountain or water spout. The blue crest resembles a frozen jet of water, while the tail ends in a clover-like tip. Its closed eyes reinforce its calm air and form part of a motif shared with Pansage and Pansear.

Panpour occupies the first position in a very short evolutionary line. Using a Water Stone turns it into Simipour, which keeps the Water type and develops the same idea of a monkey associated with its element. Before evolving, it stands out for its Speed of 64 and a movepool combining Water moves, Dark-type attacks and several support techniques.

Panpour in depth

A fountain shaped like a monkey

The design starts with a blue-and-cream monkey and adds a fountain, geyser or water spout to the top of its head. The tuft stores the water it later shoots through its tail, so its silhouette directly explains its behaviour. Takao Unno designed Panpour together with Pansage and Pansear. Its hands resemble oven mitts, a choice tied to the culinary theme of Striaton City's Gym, which also functions as a restaurant.

Its closed eyes fit the motif of the three wise monkeys: Panpour represents the monkey that sees no evil. Its English name combines Pan, the genus of chimpanzees, with pour. The Japanese ヒヤップ (Hiyappu) joins hiya, associated with cold water, and ape, “monkey”.

Cress's monkey

Panpour was created as the partner of Cress, one of the three Gym Leaders of Striaton City. Pansage corresponds to Cilan and Pansear to Chili, so each Leader has a monkey associated with an elemental type. This distribution also explains why the three species share base stats, Abilities and an evolution through an elemental stone.

The line debuted in Generation V and carried over into Generation VI without changes to its type or alternative forms. In Generation VII, it remained available in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. Its evolution with a Water Stone keeps the family's straightforward progression: a youthful-looking first-stage creature that transforms directly into Simipour.

Water for a normal playthrough

During the story, Water Gun does its job at first, but Scald and Surf offer much more useful options once they become available. Bite and Crunch cover opponents that resist Water, while Acrobatics lets it hit some Grass-type targets. Taunt helps against Trainers that rely on status moves, and Recycle works well with a Berry consumed through Gluttony.

It is not worth expecting it to take hits. Its 48 Defense and 48 Special Defense mean it should switch in against attacks it resists, not neutral hits. The best way to use it is to take advantage of its Speed of 64 to attack first, wear down the opponent and save Torrent for the final stretch of the battle.

The niche left by Nasty Plot

In Little Cup, Nasty Plot is the specific reason to use it. After setting up, Surf or Scald become stronger and Ice Beam broadens its coverage. The problem is finding a free turn: its defenses are low, and many Water-type rivals compete for the same slot with more power, greater Speed or better setup options.

Grass- and Electric-type attacks are its main checks. An opponent that resists Water can also force it out if it lacks the right coverage. For that reason, it is best paired with species that can pressure those types, such as Pansage or Pansear on a themed team of elemental monkeys. Outside Little Cup, its lack of stats and its pending evolution weigh too heavily.
