About Passimian

It does not evolve and has its own evolutionary line. Passimian is a primate inspired by a lemur, with features that particularly resemble the black-and-white ruffed lemur. Its design adds elements of an American football player: the shoulder leaves work as a kind of uniform and the berries take the place of the ball.

It lives in groups of around twenty individuals, with tasks divided up and a very strict hierarchy. Each troop keeps its members together, and the leader teaches a group of chosen individuals how to throw hard berries in battle. The distance reached decides who is in charge. It also uses leaves stuck on with saliva to show which group it belongs to.

Its Fighting type fits that physical, cooperative behaviour. It does not stand out for having alternative forms, but it does have a very clear identity: berry hunter, team player and potential leader. It shares Alola’s social primate theme with Oranguru, although their roles within the troop are opposite: one leads and the other carries out the orders.

Passimian in depth

The berry uniform

The design is based on a lemur, with a clear resemblance to the black-and-white ruffed lemur. The real species lives in groups and cooperates to find food, two traits transferred directly to the Pokédex entries. The sporting element can be seen in its stance, the shoulder leaves and the way it throws berries. The inspiration recalls American football, especially a player receiving or passing the ball.

The English name combines “pass” and “simian”. The Japanese name is ナゲツケサル, Nagetukesaru, formed from 投げつける, “to throw”, and 猿, “monkey”. The Japanese etymology describes its battle method without beating around the bush: the berry is food, weapon and symbol of authority.

A species born in Alola

Passimian debuted in the seventh generation alongside the concept of Alolan troops. Since then, it has kept its Fighting type, appearance and own evolutionary line. What has changed is the movepool available between generations. During the Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon era, it gained access to Knock Off and Gunk Shot through Move Tutors, two moves that expanded its ability to punish switches and threaten Fairy types.

In Scarlet and Violet, its learnset focuses on direct physical attacks, with Close Combat, Throat Chop, Double-Edge and Giga Impact by level. It also has support tools such as Bulk Up, Protect, Taunt, Baton Pass and U-turn. It is not a species with changing forms: its entire identity is concentrated on the organisation of the troop.

The runner that cannot stay alone

In singles teams, the most useful pattern is to come in against Rock-, Dark- or Bug-type attacks, apply pressure with Close Combat or Knock Off and leave with U-turn when a foe that resists Fighting appears. Defiant rewards attempts to lower its stats, but it is not worth forcing the activation: a Flying-, Psychic- or Fairy-type attacker can use the turn to knock it out.

Choice Scarf offsets its 80 Speed and allows it to act as a fast revenge killer. A more aggressive variant uses Choice Band or a boost from Bulk Up, although both leave its lack of recovery more exposed. Earthquake covers Poison types; Gunk Shot and Iron Head can surprise Fairy types, and Knock Off remains valuable even when it does not score a super-effective hit.

Between Oranguru and the great apes

Its natural comparison is Oranguru, another Alolan primate defined by social life. Oranguru focuses on support and controlling the pace, while Passimian brings physical strength and immediate pressure. On a more distant line, it shares the image of an athletic primate with Vigoroth, although Vigoroth represents individual agitation and Passimian represents collective discipline.

Its body handles physical hits better than special ones thanks to its 100 HP and 90 Defense. Its 60 Special Defense, residual damage and the defensive drops from Close Combat explain why it needs to switch in carefully. The troop works as a narrative theme, but in battle its best translation is simple: hit, force a switch and pass the turn to another team member.
