Pyukumuku in depth
A sea cucumber with a fist inside
Its body is based on a sea cucumber, but its rounded shape, small appendages and facial expression have also been linked to sea slugs known as “sea bunnies”. Its mouth is used to expel its innards, which take the shape of a fist and explain both its appearance and the way it attacks. The Japanese name Namakobushi combines namako, “sea cucumber”, and kobushi, “fist”. The English name Pyukumuku preserves the sound of the original and adds associations with “puke”, “cucumber” and “mucus”.
The wall that does not want to attack
Its stat spread makes the intention clear: 130 Defense and 130 Special Defense, compared with only 30 Special Attack and 60 Attack. It is not trying to win through strength, but to stay on the field, recover and wear the opponent down. Unaware lets it ignore the opponent’s boosts, a particularly useful role against attackers that need to accumulate boosts to break through defensive teams.
The most recognisable set revolves around Recover, Toxic and Soak. Recover preserves its health, Toxic provides the damage it lacks and Soak changes the target’s type to Water. It can also use Counter to punish a physical hit, although that option requires it to take the attack and does not solve its problem against special attackers. Innards Out offers a more aggressive answer: if it is knocked out, it deals damage equal to the HP it had left.
How to beat it
Passivity is its biggest flaw. Taunt blocks almost all of its useful options and Substitute stops Toxic from doing its job. Grass- and Electric-type attackers pressure it with super effective moves, while a powerful attacker can put it outside Recover range before the residual damage starts to matter. It is also unwise to rely on Unaware against abilities that bypass it or against opponents that do not need to boost their stats.
In a standard battle, it works best when it comes in against an opponent that cannot knock it out in two hits or prevent its status moves. Keeping it healthy is a priority: weakened by hazards or previous hits, it stops checking the threats that justify bringing it. Gastrodon and Quagsire share its profile as defensive Water-type Pokémon, but offer more offensive presence or direct utility. Pyukumuku sacrifices both in exchange for focusing on stalling and Unaware.
From Alola to Galar
Pyukumuku first appeared in the seventh generation, tied to Alola’s beaches and the tradition of returning specimens washed ashore to the sea. In Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield it retained its concept and defensive role, with a movepool that still includes Recover, Toxic, Soak and Counter. It also became available in various aquatic areas of Galar, both in the overworld and through fishing and certain Max Raid Battles.
Its design has a counterpart in Stunfisk: both look like harmless marine creatures until the opponent gets too close, but Pyukumuku turns that defence into a stalling strategy. The species never received an evolution that changed its role. It remains a small coastal animal that protects itself with mucus, innards and patience.
