Sprigatito in depth
A name among leaves and meows
The English name combines “sprig”, a small branch or shoot, with “gatito”, a Spanish word meaning “kitten”. The choice fits its feline body and its plant-like fur, as described in its Pokédex entries. Its Japanese name, ニャオハ, is read Nyahoja: it brings together ニャー, the sound of a meow, with “hoja” in Spanish and 葉, the Japanese character associated with leaves. It is not a translation of the English name, but it preserves the same combination of cat and plant.
A line that changes profession
The evolution line keeps the feline motif, although each stage moves further away from the appearance of a small domestic animal. Sprigatito represents the sprout and initial growth; Floragato retains the agility of a young feline; Meowscarada develops the image of a masked illusionist. This progression can also be seen in battle: the first stage has tools for harassing opponents, while the final stage concentrates much more offensive power.
What it offers in Little Cup
Its base Speed of 65 lets it apply pressure from the start of the battle, and its base Attack of 61 means that Scratch, Quick Attack, Seed Bomb, and U-turn are not negligible hits. A physical approach makes better use of its stats, although Energy Ball is useful against opponents with higher Defense than Special Defense. U-turn is especially useful for maintaining momentum: it comes in, forces a response, and makes way for a teammate that can better withstand the expected attack.
Protean rewards choosing the first move carefully, but it should not be treated as permanent protection. When it changes to the type of the attack used, it gains the corresponding type bonus and alters its resistances, but after that activation it once again depends on its single Grass typing. Overgrow is less flashy and works directly when its HP falls very low, precisely when Leafage, Seed Bomb, or Energy Ball receive the boost.
Its limits against other unevolved Pokémon
The main problem is not a lack of moves. It has Agility, Nasty Plot, Substitute, Protect, Leech Seed, and Sucker Punch, as well as coverage such as Shadow Claw, Play Rough, and Mud-Slap. The problem is gathering enough power and bulk to make use of them. Its 40 HP and 45 Special Defense mean that it cannot switch repeatedly into neutral attacks, and its weaknesses to Fire, Ice, Poison, Flying, and Bug leave it few safe switches.
That is why it works better as a pressure piece than as a wall or an attacker capable of sweeping on its own. In a normal playthrough, it performs well during the early routes, when its Speed and Grass-type attacks cover Water-, Ground-, and Rock-type opponents. In extended battles, evolving into Floragato at level 16 immediately changes its options.
