About Teddiursa

It lives in the mountains, and the most reliable way to find one is to follow the trail of honey. It has a pale crescent-shaped mark on its forehead that lights up when it finds a beehive, after which it spends hours licking its sticky paws. Pokédex entries return to that gesture game after game. One of them adds a less obvious detail: it makes its own honey by mixing fruit with the pollen collected by Beedrill, so it does not rely solely on raiding other Pokémon's nests.

Outside the honey business, it behaves like a resourceful animal. Before food becomes scarce in winter, it hides supplies in places known only to it, a real-bear habit carried over without embellishment. At 60 centimetres and 8.8 kilograms, it can fit in your arms, and its official category, the Little Bear Pokémon, is nothing more than that.

It occupies the juvenile rung of its evolutionary line. At level 30 it evolves into Ursaring, which no longer fits in anyone's arms, and the third step, Ursaluna, arrived many years later and depends on using a Peat Block under a full moon. The crescent on its forehead, which for generations was just a decorative mark, ended up foreshadowing something.

Teddiursa in depth

The princess named teddy bear

ヒメグマ, Himeguma, combines hime (princess) with guma, the voiced form of kuma, bear. The prefix hime appears in Japanese in the names of quite a few small animals, where it works more as a diminutive than a title, and here it fits the size better than the sex: the species has males and females in equal numbers. English went in another direction and built Teddiursa from teddy, the teddy bear, and ursa, the Latin she-bear. Two names, two readings: one sees it as a woodland cub, the other as a toy on a shelf.

The mark on its forehead is what ties the whole line together. It is a crescent one shade lighter than its fur, and the entries use it as a signal: it lights up when the Pokémon finds honey. The fact that the final evolution ended up depending on a full moon was not written in 2000, but it does not feel out of place either.

From Route 45 to Dark Cave

In Gold and Silver, distribution was not equal. Teddiursa was exclusive to Gold and only appeared on Route 45, a late-game area reached on the way to Mahogany Town; Silver had Phanpy instead. Crystal moved it to Dark Cave and also restricted it to the morning. Between the specific version, the late route and the time-of-day window, plenty of people finished Johto without seeing one, which explains why its fame is considerably lower than its evolution's.

Its abilities have changed too. During its first appearances with abilities, it only had Pickup; Quick Feet was added in Generation IV and is the only thing that gives it an identity in battle. Honey Gather, its Hidden Ability, is pure thematic decoration: it collects honey outside battle and nothing more.

Level 30 arrives before its best moves

That is the practical conflict in raising it. It evolves at 30, but its level-up learnset keeps handing out moves afterwards: Charm at 33, Rest and Snore at 37, and Thrash at 41. Anyone who evolves it as soon as possible is not missing much, because the adult bear has its own list; anyone who delays it for fun is stuck with Play Rough, learned at level 29, as its best attack for eleven straight levels. Before that, things are even worse: Fury Attack at 8 and Revenge at 13 are transitional moves, while Slash takes too long to arrive at 22. The sensible move is to evolve it and rely on TMs, which are generous in its case: Earthquake, Crunch, Body Slam, Double-Edge and all three elemental punches are on the list.

There are plenty of little bears

The template of a cute cub that hits hard has been repeated several times since then, and the most direct comparison is Cubchoo, which does the same thing in an Ice-themed version, with snot instead of honey. The difference is in the distribution: that one leans on Special Attack and this one does not, and where Cubchoo depends on hail or snow to function, Teddiursa depends on nothing more than reaching level 30.

The honey business leaves one detail of internal consistency: Honey Gather, its Hidden Ability, is the same one carried by Combee, and the descriptions say it sneaks into Combee's hives to empty them. An ability that is useless in battle and exists mainly so that two very different species can share a scene.
