A mushroom with jellyfish-like legs
The design is based on a wood ear mushroom, also called a “wood ear”, whose Japanese name is connected to the idea of a tree jellyfish. This connection explains why its body resembles Tentacool without sharing its biology. The appendages are no longer aquatic tentacles: they function as legs, a difference that turns the marine silhouette into a terrestrial forest creature.
The English name combines “toadstool”, a word used to refer to certain mushrooms, with “toed”, related to toes, and “Tentacool”. The Japanese name ノノクラゲ is read Nonokurage. It combines no, meaning “field”, with kikurage, the Japanese name for the wood ear mushroom, and a phonetic reference to Menokurage, Tentacool’s Japanese name.
A new species in Generation IX
Toedscool first appeared in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, so there are no changes to its stats, moves, or Abilities between generations to compare. Its line occupies the role of a convergent species: it resembles Tentacool through independent evolution, but does not share its evolutionary line or its Water typing. The comparison also applies to Toedscruel, which keeps the same visual idea of a jellyfish transferred onto solid ground.
The Paldean Pokédex insists on keeping the two species separate. One entry talks about the soft, edible remnants that break off its body; the other focuses on its speed and thin legs. The contrast sums up its design well: it looks weak and clumsy until it starts running.
How to use it before it evolves
In a regular playthrough, it works better as a support Pokémon than as an attacker. It learns Spore at level 36, and its perfect accuracy makes it an effective tool for stopping an opponent during exploration or a long battle. Mycelium Might allows the move to ignore the target’s defensive Abilities, although the Ability’s own effect makes status moves act later than normal in the priority order.
Its Special Defense of 100 lets it switch in more safely against special attacks, while its Speed of 70 helps it avoid always falling behind. It should not be left in against physical attackers: its HP is 40 and its Defense is 35. Giga Drain and Earth Power cover its two main offensive typings, while Mud Shot adds Speed control without relying on a contact move.
An unusual support movepool
Access to Rapid Spin, Knock Off, Spikes, and Toxic Spikes allows it to fill several utility roles in Little Cup. Rapid Spin removes hazards, Knock Off cuts into the opponent’s resources, and Spikes punish switches. This concentration of tools makes up for its modest direct damage. As an Egg Move, Rapid Spin is worth preparing before breeding; it does not appear in its level-up movepool.
Ground typing provides an immunity to Electric and resistances to Ground and Rock. Grass typing, on the other hand, gives it highly punishable weaknesses to Fire, Ice, Bug, and Flying. A well-chosen Ice move is often enough to knock it out, especially if it comes from a physical attacker. Evolving at level 30 changes the role of the line, but Toedscool’s functional oddity lies in combining Spore, Mycelium Might, and control tools before reaching Toedscruel.
