Yanmega

In Generation IV, with Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, this large dragonfly appeared as the evolution of Yanma. Its design is based on a dragonfly, but it also takes features from Meganeura, a prehistoric genus related to these insects and of much greater proportions. The Japanese name, Megayanma, combines “mega” with yanma, a Japanese word associated with large dragonflies. The English and Spanish names preserve the same idea.

Its green body is compact, and its broad wings allow it to manoeuvre at high speed. Pokédex entries describe an attacking technique based on tearing its opponent apart with its jaws before it can react. They also highlight its carrying strength: its six legs let it transport an adult while flying, with the tail wings helping it keep its balance.

It occupies the final position in its evolutionary line. Yanma evolves when it levels up while knowing Ancient Power, a condition that connects its appearance as a modern dragonfly with the reference to a prehistoric insect. Its category is the Dragonfly Pokémon, and it combines the Bug and Flying types.

Its stat distribution makes its role clear: 86 HP, 76 Attack, 86 Defense, 116 Special Attack, 56 Special Defense, and 95 Speed, for a total of 515. Special Attack is its main value, while Special Defense greatly limits its ability to switch into special attacks. Its physical Attack falls well behind, although it learns U-turn and some useful physical moves.

Speed Boost is the ability that defines its sweeping teams. It gradually raises its Speed while it remains in battle, and Protect allows it to gain a safe turn to activate the boost. The offensive alternative is Tinted Lens, which doubles the damage of moves that are not very effective. With it, Bug Buzz and Air Slash are difficult to stop through resistances alone. U-turn lets it strike and switch out when faced with an unfavourable matchup.

The Bug and Flying types give it an immunity to Ground and resistances to Fighting, Grass, and Bug, but they also stack weaknesses to Electric, Fire, Ice, Flying, and Rock. Its weakness to Stealth Rock is especially severe, because each entry costs it a lot of health. It also cannot take special hits well, and faster opponents can bring it down before Speed Boost activates. Historically, it saw use in OU, UU, and RU depending on the generation, but its usage has always been conditioned by entry hazards and the need to switch in without taking prior damage.

Yanmega belongs to the Bug Egg Group and has an even gender ratio, with 50% female. Its Eggs require 20 cycles to hatch, equivalent to approximately 5355 steps. Breeding allows it to inherit Whirlwind, Double-Edge, and Feint; Double-Edge provides direct physical damage, while Feint offers a priority option for finishing off a weakened opponent.

The evolution requirement is exact: Yanma must level up while knowing Ancient Power. It is not enough for it to have learned it at some point; it must have it among its moves when it reaches the level needed to evolve.

Its catch rate is 30, so obtaining it by catching it is difficult compared with species with high catch rates. The Wide Lens is among the items that a wild specimen can carry. When breeding, the Bug Egg Group also makes it easier to breed it with other compatible species in that group, provided the usual compatibility and inheritance rules are followed.
