About Accelgor

In bogs and marshy areas, where the humidity keeps its body from drying out, lives a light and speedy creature that has lost the shell from its previous stage. The blue membranes covering its body overlap to retain water, while the extensions on its back resemble bandages or a combat cloak. Its appearance combines traits of a slug or snail with those of a ninja, and its head, curved at the back, looks like an open helmet.

Pokédex entries describe it spitting poison and moving at breakneck speed. They also explain that abandoning its shell made it more agile, although the loss gives it a grumpy expression and folded arms. This combination of speed, membranes and acrobatic movements defines its behaviour both in battle and outside it.

It occupies the final position in a two-species evolutionary line. Shelmet evolves into Accelgor through a special trade with Karrablast, which also changes form during the process.

Accelgor in depth

A runner without a shell

The design starts from a simple idea: a mollusc that abandons its shell to adopt the image of a speedy ninja. The head resembles a helmet, the body is covered by a cloth-like membrane and the strips on its back evoke combat bandages. It also has traits of a slug, snail or even a tube worm. Its angry expression is not accidental: the species is annoyed at having lost its shell.

The English name combines “accelerate” and “escargot”, the French word for “snail”. The Japanese Agilder combines the idea of agility with that of a rider. Both names insist on speed, while the design preserves its link with Shelmet and its shell.

The trade pair

Accelgor and Karrablast form one of the series’ most unusual trade-based evolutions. Shelmet gives up its shell and Karrablast uses it to evolve into Escavalier; as a result, both Pokémon change during the same operation. In practice, this means getting one depends on another player or a second game, unless the title offers a specific alternative.

It first appeared in Generation V. It was then absent from the Alola Pokédex, returned in Sword and Shield and is not among the species available in the games set in Paldea. Its movepool has also changed: in Sword and Shield it received Water Shuriken as a signature move for that stage, while the moveset it retains here stands out for Spikes, Recover and Final Gambit.

Speed at the cost of its body

With 145 Speed, Accelgor builds its whole identity around moving first. On an offensive team, it can lead the game, set up Spikes and pivot out with U-turn. If the opponent tries to use it to set up a stat boost, Encore can lock them into that move. Recover extends its presence when it forces a switch, although its 40 Defense means it should not take physical hits without good reason.

Its offensive spread favours Bug Buzz and Giga Drain: 100 Special Attack is clearly better than 70 Attack. Focus Blast broadens its coverage against Steel and Rock, but its accuracy means accepting misses. Final Gambit offers an emergency exit while it still has plenty of HP: it deals damage equal to its remaining HP and then knocks it out.

What stops it

The Bug type does not give it many defensive opportunities. It resists Fighting, Grass and Ground, but is weak to Fire, Flying and Rock. Priority moves also ignore its Speed advantage, and Choice Scarf users can outspeed it. Entry hazards are another problem, as they reduce its opportunities to switch in and out with U-turn.

Unburden can double its Speed when it loses its item, although giving up the item is not always worthwhile. Sticky Hold better protects a strategy that depends on keeping it, and prevents item theft. Hydration is reserved for rain teams, where status conditions stop being a constant threat. Accelgor works when its team gives it safe entry points and keeps Fire-, Flying- and Rock-type opponents under control.
