About Arctovish

It looks like a carefully reconstructed prehistoric fish, but its body shows that something went wrong. Arctovish is an artificial Fossil Pokémon assembled from parts that resemble a Dunkleosteus at the front and a plesiosaur at the back. The result calls to mind the old paleontological reconstructions that joined the remains of different animals and produced physically impossible creatures, such as the sculptures at Crystal Palace in Bromley.

Its mouth is positioned on top of its head. This arrangement allows it to trap prey by freezing the surroundings, but makes it difficult to swallow and breathe as well. The Pokédex entries present this anatomy as the cause of its extinction: a creature capable of withstanding attacks to the face, but unable to feed and breathe normally.

Its appearance links it to other Galar fossils, such as Dracovish and Arctozolt, although it does not share an evolutionary line with them. Arctovish does not evolve and does not come from another species. Its form is unique and it has retained its Water/Ice typing since its debut.

Arctovish in depth

A fossil assembled from the wrong pieces

Arctovish's design is based on a specific idea from paleontology: reconstructing an animal from incomplete remains and putting together bones that actually belonged to different species. Its head resembles a Dunkleosteus, an armored fish, while its lower body is closer to a marine reptile such as a plesiosaur. The inverted position of its head and mouth turns that reconstruction error into a visible biological problem.

The reference to Crystal Palace in Bromley reinforces the idea. Its old sculptures of prehistoric animals were made using interpretations that are now considered incorrect. Galar's fossils take that concept to the extreme: they do not represent a misunderstood species, but a creature that probably would never have functioned as a complete organism.

A name made from an Arctic fish

Arctovish combines the English words arctic and fish, a direct allusion to its frozen, aquatic appearance. Its Japanese name, Uochilldon, contains uo, meaning “fish” in Japanese, chill, associated with cold, and the suffix “-don”, common in dinosaur names and derived from a Greek word associated with teeth. Both versions emphasize the same ideas: fish, cold, and prehistoric animal.

From Sword and Shield to an absent species

It debuted in the eighth generation alongside the other Galar fossils. Its acquisition method depends on combining fossils, not on leveling up or using an Evolution Stone. It also has no later evolution that corrects its anatomy or changes its role.

Its presence remained tied to Sword and Shield. It does not appear in the ninth generation, so it has not received a later stage with new forms or stat adjustments. Within the main series, its playable history is concentrated in the Galar region.

How to make the fossil last through a battle

The practical way to use it is to build the team around hail and activate Slush Rush. Without that weather, 55 Speed limits its offensive turns too much. With hail active, Blizzard gains accuracy and Arctovish can make use of its 90 Special Attack; Fishious Rend and other physical attacks take advantage of its 90 Attack, while Hydro Pump covers targets that do not want to expose themselves to its Ice-type attacks.

Water Absorb provides a safe switch-in against Water-type moves and punishes opponents that try to wear it down that way. Ice Body restores HP during hail, although its usefulness depends on Arctovish being able to remain on the field without taking a super effective hit. Aurora Veil and Protect help it buy extra turns, but they do not solve its weaknesses to Electric, Grass, Fighting, and Rock.

It shares the combined-fossil concept with Arctozolt and Dracovish, but its profile is more defensive and less explosive. Its 100 Defense and 90 HP let it withstand some physical hits, while its lack of natural Speed forces it to preserve the weather and choose its moment to switch in carefully.
