About Aron

The Bulgasari of Korean legend is a monster that eats iron and grows fatter with every bite. That is where the idea comes from, crossed with an armoured dinosaur from the nodosaurid family and the riveted plates of an ancient suit of armour. The Pokédex entries make no attempt to hide it: it lives in high, inaccessible mountain areas, and when hunger takes hold it comes down to bite rails, bridges and vehicles. One of them describes it demolishing a rubbish truck with a full-force charge, then eating it.

That diet serves a specific purpose. The armour covering its body is made from the iron ore it extracts from rock, and when it evolves it does not keep it: the whole shell falls off, and a new one forms underneath. The latest entry adds that these discarded shells used to be collected and put to use.

It is 40 centimetres tall and weighs 60 kilograms, so most of what is there is metal. Its official category, the Iron Armor Pokémon, sums it up better than any description of the animal underneath. It is the first of a three-stage line that reaches Aggron via Lairon, and the only one of the three that can still fit in one arm.

Aron in depth

Kokodora, the gallery dragon

The Japanese name, ココドラ, packs three things into four syllables: 坑道 (kōdō, mine gallery), 小 or 子 (ko, small or child) and the dora ending from dragon. The whole line keeps the pattern and scales it up — コドラ for Lairon, ボスゴドラ for Aggron, where bosu means “boss”. English goes in a different direction and combines armor with iron, with no dragon anywhere. The Spanish name keeps the English term unchanged.

The mine reading fits everything else. It is not a dragon that flies or breathes anything: it is a tunnel-dwelling animal that chews mineral, and its quadrupedal shape with an armoured head points to nodosaurids, ankylosaurs without a club at the end of the tail.

Generation VI took away two resistances

Up to Generation V, Steel resisted Dark and Ghost. Aron took half damage from both and was, on paper, one of the most complete defensive types in the game. Generation VI removed those two resistances from Steel, and since then a Dark- or Ghost-type attack hits it neutrally. The change affected the whole family equally, but it is more noticeable at the lower stage, where there is no spare HP to absorb what used to be discounted automatically.

In the other direction, Generation V had improved Sturdy. Before then, it was limited to blocking one-hit knockout moves — Fissure, Guillotine and the like — which made it almost useless. Since then, it prevents any one-hit KO from full HP, and that is what turned this Pokémon into something to take seriously in low-level formats.

There is also a purely visual tweak: the back of its head was black in the Generation VI games and became metallic grey in Generation VII.

The price of a long line

Compared with the things it resembles, it loses out in terms of time. Larvitar evolves at 30 and 55, and shares the Slow growth rate, but ends up as something with a 600 base stat total. Shieldon, the other armoured fossil and the closest parallel, evolves only once and at a lower level. Aron needs to reach 32 and then 42 to complete a line whose final destination has weaknesses of its own, including four-times weaknesses.

The interesting part is that the middle and final stages barely improve what matters here. A Defence stat of 100 at level 5 is already high for its context; what it gains later is bulk and Attack, not survival against the things that kill it. That is why the unevolved specimen has a use of its own that the completed line does not inherit: an opponent confident they can take it down in one hit discovers they cannot, and Endeavour does the rest.

Autotomize, at level 40, is an ironic detail in a creature whose Hidden Ability consists precisely of making it weigh twice as much. And Metal Burst, at level 60, is never seen on an Aron: by then, any specimen has spent almost thirty levels being something else.
