Audino in depth
A stethoscope turned into ears
The design starts with a rabbit and takes it into the medical field. The feelers on its ears look like a stethoscope, while its silhouette and colours resemble a nurse’s uniform. The idea goes beyond appearance: Pokédex entries turn those appendages into organs capable of reading heartbeats, diagnosing states of health, and detecting Eggs that are close to hatching. The species was designed to fill in Unova the role that Chansey had held as the Pokémon associated with Pokémon Centers.
The English name combines “audio” with a phonetic play on “I dunno”. The Japanese name Tabunne is based on “tabun ne”, an expression equivalent to “maybe”, and also alludes to the idea of hearing many sounds. Both versions point to its two central traits: extraordinary hearing and an identity linked to uncertainty or diagnosis.
The form that changed its possibilities
Audino debuted in the fifth generation as a species with no evolution. In the sixth, it received Mega Audino, which added the Fairy type and strengthened its defenses, although that form does not appear in Sword/Shield’s base roster. Mega Evolution changed its role: it stopped being merely a support creature with unremarkable stats and gained a defensive form that could take hits better and threaten Dark- and Fighting-types with Fairy-type attacks.
That change also altered how Regenerator was viewed. Before Mega Evolving, it lets Audino switch in and out to preserve its HP; afterwards, the alternative form becomes sturdier but gives up that Ability in favour of Healer. In generations with Mega Evolution, choosing to transform was not automatic: keeping the normal form allowed it to pivot, while the Mega form provided extra resilience and the Fairy type when the matchup called for it.
A wall that needs help to attack
The 103/86/86 distribution in HP and defenses gives it a durable foundation, but the 60 points in Attack and Special Attack limit any offensive set. Hyper Voice is its cleanest direct option, while Psychic covers opponents that resist Normal. Flamethrower, Surf, Ice Beam, and Drain Punch expand its coverage, although spreading its moves across several offensive options does not solve its lack of power.
Its best use is to come in against special hits that are not super effective, set up Light Screen or Reflect, and make it easier for another team member to enter. In doubles, Helping Hand and Heal Pulse are more valuable because they turn a defensive turn into immediate support. Trick Room also makes use of its 50 Speed, especially if the rest of the team is built to move later.
The cost of being so passive
The opponent has plenty of ways to take advantage of the turns when Audino poses no threat. Protect, Thunder Wave, and Misty Terrain help control the pace, but they do not stop a Pokémon capable of boosting its stats from coming in and starting to set up. Double-Edge and Last Resort hit harder than its usual attacks, although the former wears down the user and the latter requires a specific usage condition.
In an adventure, its durability and access to coverage moves such as Surf, Flamethrower, and Ice Beam let it serve as a general-purpose option. On a support-focused team, it works best alongside attackers that need safe turns to come in. Its role is not to sweep the opponent, but to preserve resources, heal allies, and force switches with status tools.
