A stage built on a sea lion

The design blends a sea lion with performing artists. The flippers, bubbles and body posture evoke animals trained to perform, while the dancing introduces references to dancers, circus performers and stage singers. That combination explains why it does not simply throw water: it makes balloons, follows rhythms and learns choreographies by watching others.

The English name, Brionne, combines the idea of stage flair with the sea lion reference. In Japanese it is called オシャマリ, and the «mari» part brings a ball to mind, a detail that fits the water spheres it creates. The whole design maintains a clear link with Popplio, which is more childish and playful, and prepares Primarina’s transformation into an artist much more focused on its voice.

From Alola to later games

Brionne debuted in the seventh generation alongside Popplio and Primarina. It kept the Water type throughout its middle stage, while Primarina added the Fairy type upon evolving. It was available in Sword and Shield, although part of its previous movepool was limited to moves obtained through transfer. In Scarlet and Violet, it regained prominence with an updated set that includes Flip Turn, Triple Axel, Ice Spinner and Chilling Water.

That journey did not change its basic role. It remains a transitional special attacker, useful while progressing towards its final evolution, rather than a species designed to stay on the field for many turns.

How to make the most of its turns

The priority is to use its resistances to switch in against Fire-, Ice-, Steel- or Water-type attacks. Afterwards, Surf is the better choice when reliability matters, while Hydro Pump is preferable if the extra damage is worth accepting its misses. Hyper Voice provides a powerful attack and, with Liquid Voice, becomes a Water-type move. Aqua Jet lets it finish off weakened opponents despite its 50 Speed, but its 40 base power limits its ability to break holes in opposing teams.

Misty Terrain, Charm and Encore give it support options. In Double Battles, Helping Hand and Hyper Voice make more sense than trying to turn it into a physical attacker: its 69 Attack is well below its 91 Special Attack. Encore can trap an opponent into an unhelpful move, while Icy Wind lowers the targets’ Speed and helps compensate for its sluggishness.

A middle stage with a personality of its own

Although its final evolution gets more attention for its Fairy typing and better stats, Brionne is not simply a visual step between two forms. The Pokédex entries give it a defined personality: it cheers up its Trainer, studies other Pokémon’s dances and practises until it masters them. It also shows an unusual social side when it dances alongside other Brionne to the rhythm of Primarina’s singing.

Its movepool reinforces that identity. Sing, Perish Song, Hyper Voice and Liquid Voice connect battle with performance, while Aqua Jet, Bubble Beam and Hydro Pump maintain the motif of water spheres and projectiles. The species is 0.6 m tall and weighs 17.5 kg, but its moves describe a much larger stage: it creates a sequence of balloons, dances as it launches them and turns the battle into an aquatic performance.
