Popplio

It inflates balloons with the water it secretes from its nose and launches them at its rivals. Popplio is a small sea lion with a circus-like appearance, featuring traits of the Hawaiian monk seal and a clear connection to trained animals balancing objects. Its design revolves around bubbles, constant practice, and acrobatic movements over the water.

Pokédex entries describe it as a diligent creature. It controls the balloons it creates, learns to make them bigger and bigger, and uses them to strike, injure opponents when they burst, or propel itself into great leaps. Talent alone is not enough: it needs to train every day to produce bubbles of a suitable size and effectiveness.

It occupies the first position in its evolutionary line. It evolves into Brionne at level 17 and then becomes Primarina at level 34. Its appearance is still compact and playful, while its evolutions develop the concept's aquatic, stage-performer side.

Popplio has no notable competitive performance outside Little Cup. Its stats are modest: 50 HP, 54 Attack, 54 Defense, 66 Special Attack, 56 Special Defense, and 40 Speed, for a total of 320. Special Attack is its best value, but it is not enough to make up for its low Speed and mediocre bulk.

Torrent is the ability that defines its use. When it is in a pinch, it powers up Water-type moves, so Hydro Pump can gain strength just when it has little health left. Liquid Voice, its Hidden Ability, turns all its sound-based moves into Water-type moves. This affects options such as Hyper Voice and Sing, although Popplio lacks the stats and Speed needed to take comfortable advantage of them.

Its Water typing lets it attack with Hydro Pump, Surf, or Bubble Beam and resist Fire, Ice, Steel, and Water. In return, it takes super effective damage from Electric and Grass. Its movepool adds Ice coverage through Icy Wind and Ice Beam, which is useful against Grass-type opponents, but its Speed of 40 makes it difficult to move before them.

In a normal playthrough, it works well as a special attacker during the early stages, especially while it learns stronger Water-type moves. In competitive battles, its place is in Little Cup, where Torrent, Icy Wind, and access to support moves such as Encore can give it a specific role. Outside that context, its evolutions offer better stats and more tools.

Popplio belongs to the Water 1 and Field Egg Groups, so it can breed with compatible species from those groups. Its gender distribution is uneven: 12.5% are female. It has 15 Egg cycles, equivalent to approximately 4080 steps using the usual formula.

Its notable Egg Moves include Perish Song, Aqua Ring, and Life Dew. Perish Song provides an uncommon pressure tool; Aqua Ring offers gradual recovery, while Life Dew can heal the team in specific situations.

Its evolution is straightforward. Popplio evolves into Brionne at level 17, and Brionne evolves into Primarina at level 34. There is no additional condition linked to friendship, the time of day, or an item.

Its catch rate is 45, so obtaining it is not trivial when it appears as a wild encounter. In games where it is part of the starter choice, obtaining another specimen requires breeding or trading. Its Eggs need a considerable number of steps to hatch, in line with its 15 Egg cycles.
