About Charmander

The flame at the tip of its tail has been burning since the moment it was born and never goes out. The Pokédex entries treat it like a medical reading: bright if the Pokémon is healthy, weak if it is exhausted, and if it were ever extinguished, the Pokémon would die. Another entry adds a finer detail — the flame responds to its mood, flickering only slightly when it is happy and burning fiercely when it is angry. In quiet places, you can hear it crackle.

Under that pilot light is a small, slight creature: 60 centimetres, 8.5 kilograms, bipedal and upright. The official classification calls it the Lizard Pokémon, although both the Japanese and English names point to a salamander. It prefers heat. It is said that steam comes from its tail when it rains, an image that sums up the problem of living with a bonfire attached to you rather well.

It occupies the first step of a three-stage line that climbs very slowly and ends up very high: Charmeleon at level 16 and Charizard at 36. That long wait is part of its character in the game, because for quite a few hours the Trainer is carrying around a creature with 39 HP that promises more than it can deliver. The habitat assigned to it by the Pokédex is the mountains, and its reference colour is red.

Charmander in depth

A salamander that is not a salamander

ヒトカゲ is read as hitokage and combines 火 (hi, fire) with トカゲ (tokage, lizard). Written with kanji, 火蜥蜴 is simply the Japanese word for salamander. English performs the same trick with different pieces: char, to scorch, plus salamander. Two languages, the same joke.

The choice of animal goes back a long way. The salamander appears in European folklore as a spirit of fire, a creature capable of living inside flames without being burned, and that tradition is what justifies an amphibian ending up as a Fire type. Visually, it has been noted as resembling both the Japanese giant salamander and the Chinese giant salamander, although its bipedal silhouette, large head and thick tail are more reminiscent of a young theropod. That dual ancestry, amphibian in the name and dinosaur in its stance, is maintained throughout the entire line.

The tail says how it feels

Few species have their state of health drawn on the outside. The flame works as a continuous indicator, and the six available Pokédex entries keep returning to the same idea from different angles: life force, emotion, sound, steam when it rains, death if it goes out. It is an effective narrative device because it turns an aesthetic feature into a permanent threat, and explains why the species has a reputation for being fragile even among people who have never looked at its stats. In game terms, the fragility is real: 39 HP and 43 Defense are among the worst figures for starters.

Kanto's most awkward start

Choosing it in Pallet Town means signing up for two uphill Gym battles before getting anything in return. Rock and Water are two of its three weaknesses, and they are placed right at the start of the journey, while its first Fire move, Ember, arrives at level 4 with 40 power. The compensation takes time: Slash at 20, Flamethrower at 24, Inferno at 36 and Flare Blitz at 40, already in Charizard form. Compared with a Bulbasaur that handles the first two Gyms almost by itself, the effort is distributed the other way around — bad start, good finish.

Returns and gifts

It has not remained confined to Professor Oak's laboratory. In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, it is given as a reward for defeating Red at Mt. Silver, a nod to the reversed order: the Pokémon that opened the first game appears after finishing the second game's final stretch. In Sword and Shield, Leon gives the player one with the Gigantamax Factor after they become Champion. In both cases, the idea is the same: give it as an ending rather than a beginning, which says quite a lot about how much symbolic weight number 004 carries.

Its base experience is 62 and its initial friendship is 70, both ordinary values. Nothing on its data sheet, apart from that flame, is out of the ordinary.
