Cofagrigus in depth
A sarcophagus with hands of its own
The design draws on the sarcophagi and funerary objects of Ancient Egypt, with a clear association with the coffins and masks linked to Tutankhamun. The rectangular shape, golden finish and black hands emerging from the sides bring the idea of a sealed tomb into Pokémon's visual language. Pokédex entries add the curse: anyone who mistakes it for a coffin ends up inside it, while anyone who gets too close may be mummified.
The English name Cofagrigus combines coffin with sarcophagus. The Japanese Desukarn combines death with kan, the Japanese term for coffin. The link with death is not limited to the name: Mummy turns physical contact with the creature into a form of supernatural contagion.
Its place alongside Yamask and Runerigus
Yamask retains the appearance of a spirit tied to a funerary mask. Upon reaching level 34, it evolves into a much larger, more material form centred on the sarcophagus. Runerigus represents the other direction of the line: instead of reinforcing the Egyptian motif, it develops the idea of an ancient relic covered in runes. Both branches share a connection with death and loss of identity, but Cofagrigus is the more direct interpretation of a coffin trap.
There is also a striking statistical difference between the two evolutions: Cofagrigus concentrates 145 base points in Defense and 95 in Special Attack, while Runerigus reverses those priorities. That is why Cofagrigus is better understood as a physical wall with an occasional special threat, rather than as a physical attacker.
When Trick Room changes the game
Its Speed of 30 does not let it compete under normal conditions against offensive opponents. Trick Room fixes that problem for several turns and opens a window to use Nasty Plot. The practical sequence is to switch in against a physical attacker it can hold back, set up Trick Room if the situation allows and then take advantage of Nasty Plot's boost to attack with Shadow Ball.
Will-O-Wisp helps reduce the damage dealt by physical attackers that rely on contact. Mummy adds another layer of punishment: if the opponent touches Cofagrigus, it loses its ability and receives Mummy. Even so, it is best to avoid strong special attacks, because 58 HP does not support its defenses and it has no direct recovery among its usual moves.
An uneven competitive history
In older generations, it received attention in RU and was also covered in UU, with Trick Room, Nasty Plot and Shadow Ball options. Guides from those periods used it as a physical wall, a spin blocker and an answer to attackers that relied on their abilities. Its problem was consistent: once weakened, it was easy to finish off because of its low Speed, weaknesses to Dark and Ghost, and reliance on support moves.
The arrival of Runerigus in Generation VIII gave the line a second evolution, but it did not replace Cofagrigus's identity. The sarcophagus form remains the branch associated with Special Attack, Mummy and reversing the order of battle with Trick Room. Its wild-held item, Spell Tag, preserves the funerary tone that defines the species.
