Croagunk

In Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, part of the fourth generation, Croagunk appeared as a humanoid Toxic Mouth Pokémon. Its design draws on poisonous frogs: a compact body, blue skin and cheek pouches where it stores toxins. The combination of Poison and Fighting is also reflected in the way it attacks, relying on ambushes, short strikes and irritant substances.

Pokédex entries describe it as a cunning opponent. It inflates its poison sacs to produce an eerie sound, distracts its foe and uses that opening to jab it or inject poison. It does not rely on strength alone: deception and the element of surprise are part of its behaviour. Its poison also has medicinal properties when diluted, which explains its connection to a pharmaceutical company that adopted it as a mascot.

It occupies the first position in a two-species evolutionary line. At level 37 it evolves into Toxicroak, which retains the Poison and Fighting types and develops a more aggressive physical presence.

Croagunk is not a common competitive choice. Its 48 HP, 40 Defense and 40 Special Defense leave it exposed to many attacks, while its 61 Attack and 61 Special Attack let it deal damage from either side without standing out in either. Its Speed is 50, and its base stat total is only 300.

Dry Skin is the ability that most defines how it is used. It loses HP in hot weather and restores it with water, so switching into a Water-type move lets it recover health instead of taking damage. Anticipation warns it about the opponent’s dangerous moves, but offers less practical value. Poison Touch can poison the target on contact and is its Hidden Ability.

The Poison and Fighting types give it useful attacks against Fairy, Grass, Rock, Steel, Ice and Dark, although its own weaknesses to Ground, Flying and Psychic are easy to exploit. Sucker Punch provides priority, Poison Jab offers a physical option with 80 power, and Sludge Bomb reaches 90 power on the special side. Nasty Plot lets it boost its Special Attack before attacking.

In a normal playthrough, it works best during the mid-game, when it can take advantage of its varied movepool and punish slow foes or those vulnerable to Poison. In demanding battles, its low defenses and limited Speed mean that it needs to be brought in with great precision.

Croagunk belongs to the Human-Like Egg Group and has an even gender split: 50 females. It completes 10 Egg Cycles, equivalent to approximately 2805 steps using the usual hatching conversion.

Its notable Egg Moves include Fake Out, which lets it act with priority when entering battle; Bullet Punch, useful against targets weak to Steel; and Vacuum Wave, a special Fighting-type attack with priority. Counter and Cross Chop also expand its physical options, while Quick Guard provides a status move for playing around the opponent’s attacks.

Its catch rate is 140. It is not among the difficult species to catch: it is much closer to an easy catch than to a species with a catch rate of 45. In its evolutionary line, Croagunk evolves into Toxicroak at level 37. The item that can be found on wild specimens is Black Sludge, which is especially useful for Poison-type Pokémon.
