About Dolliv

Two green olives crown its head, between leaves that also form its arms. Its body, widened at the bottom like a dress, conceals thin legs and gives it a silhouette closer to a small dryad than to a conventional tree. Its oil has a fresh aroma and a pleasant taste, and it shares it with the people of the settlements where it has lived since ancient times. It spends long hours basking in the sun; when the fruits ripen, it leaves those places and sets off on its own journey.

Dolliv is the middle stage of a line centred on the olive tree. It evolves from Smoliv when it reaches level 25 and reaches its final form, Arboliva, at level 35. The change keeps the Grass and Normal types, but its appearance leaves behind the tiny shape of the first stage and prepares the emergence of the adult tree.

Dolliv in depth

An olive with a dryad’s shape

The design is based on a green olive and a dryad, a plant creature from mythology. The reference to Paldea is direct: the olive tree is one of the most recognisable agricultural features of the Iberian Peninsula. Its light-coloured head, the leaves sticking out like a crown and the two fruits placed on top reinforce that reading. Its body does not imitate a trunk; it has a humanoid shape covered by a kind of leafy skirt, which is why the silhouette resembles a doll made of leaves.

The English name combines “doll” with “olive”. The Japanese name オリーニョ, Olinyo, keeps the reference to the olive tree; for the rest, “aliño”, a Spanish word related to a condiment, and the Portuguese diminutive “-inho” have both been proposed. Neither reading changes the main idea: it is a small olive-tree creature linked to everyday life and food.

Oil, sun and departure

The Pokédex entries in Scarlet and Violet describe a species integrated into human settlements. It shares its fresh oil with other people, but it does not stay there forever. When the fruits ripen, it leaves. That detail sets Dolliv apart from a domestic plant: it needs company, although its natural cycle eventually takes it far away.

In battle, that same identity translates into draining and recovery moves. Leech Seed, Giga Drain and Grassy Terrain fit a creature that draws resources from the ground, while Energy Ball provides a reliable special attack. Grassy Terrain also improves the team’s surroundings and reduces the damage of certain Ground-type moves against Pokémon on the ground. The practical problem is its 33 Speed. Even during the adventure, many opponents will act first.

The most awkward stretch of the line

Compared with Smoliv, Dolliv gains more physical presence and stops looking like a freshly sprouted olive. Compared with Arboliva, it is still a passing stage: it keeps the same concept of an oil-producing plant, but it does not yet have the shape of an adult tree. The evolution at level 35 arrives relatively early in a normal playthrough, so training it for a long time after level 25 only makes sense if you want to complete a specific part of the journey without evolving it.

Its Normal type provides a useful immunity to Ghost, but it also adds weaknesses that Grass no longer fully offsets. Water, Electric, Grass and Ground are favourable defensive matchups; Fire, Ice, Fighting, Poison, Flying and Bug force you to switch it out or protect it. Its 78 Special Defense lets it survive moderate special attacks more reliably, but its 52 HP limits how much it can take advantage of it.

A species from Generation IX

Dolliv debuted in Generation IX with Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet, and it carries no changes from previous generations because it did not exist before then. Its most distinctive move is Terrain Pulse, which it learns by levelling up. When a terrain is active, this attack becomes stronger and changes its type to match the terrain, so it naturally combines with Grassy Terrain.

It also provides 2 Special Attack EVs when defeated, a useful detail for trainers preparing a species focused on that stat. Its growth rate is Medium Slow, so levelling it requires more experience than with a standard progression line. The result is a middle stage recognisable by its oil, its ripened fruits and the exact moment when it leaves the human settlements behind.
