Smoliv in depth
An olive with its own reserve
The design starts from a green olive, with the fruit placed on its body like a small cup. The leaves around it reinforce the impression of a young plant, while the short legs and toothed mouth give it a more animal-like expression. The idea of stored oil directly connects its appearance to its behaviour: it transforms nutrients, stores them in the fruit, and expels them when it feels threatened. It is not an aggressive attacker. Its response is to slow down its opponent and escape.
The choice fits Paldea, a region inspired by the Iberian Peninsula and closely associated with olive cultivation. Its shiny form, which resembles a black olive, keeps the same agricultural reference.
The small name and the Japanese version
Smoliv combines «smol», a deliberately diminutive form of «small», with «olive». The result describes both its size and its concept without hiding the main reference. In Japanese, it is called Minive (ミニーブ), formed from «mini» and «olive». Both names follow the same structure: one word indicating smallness and another identifying the olive.
The line keeps the plant motif while increasing in scale. Smoliv concentrates its oil in a fruit; Dolliv develops a silhouette more like an ornamental plant, and Arboliva takes the idea all the way to a mature tree.
A species born in Generation IX
Smoliv debuted in Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet and has no previous version that received adjustments between generations. Its line also has no alternate forms in the associated game data. Since its debut, the feature that distinguishes it most is the Grass and Normal combination, which is unusual for a species based on a plant.
That Normal typing adds an immunity to Ghost, but also a weakness to Fighting that a pure Grass-type Pokémon would not have. When attacking, Smoliv has access to Grass STAB and Normal moves, although its Special Attack of 58 is not enough to turn it into a lasting threat. Access to Terrain Pulse at level 38 is a thematic rarity for the line, tied to its relationship with fields and plant-covered terrain.
How it works during the adventure
It is best used as a supporting special attacker, not as a Pokémon meant to break through opponents by brute force. Mega Drain lets it recover HP while dealing damage, Grassy Terrain improves the team’s presence, and Leech Seed punishes opponents that cannot remove it quickly. Energy Ball, learned at level 30, is its most reliable Grass move among those it obtains by level.
Its low Speed means accepting that it will take hits before acting. It is also best to avoid matchups against Fire-, Ice-, Poison-, Flying-, Bug-, or Fighting-type users, because its defenses do not make up for so many weaknesses. Early Bird helps if the opponent uses sleep, but it does not change its general role. Harvest offers a slower option based on Berries and recovery, although it requires protecting Smoliv while it sets up its position.
Its greatest use is supporting an adventure until it reaches Dolliv. While it remains unevolved, it provides recovery, terrain control, and early access to special Grass moves. Its oil reserve lets it go a week without eating or drinking, but in battle it still needs support to overcome its Speed of 30.
