Exploud in depth
A pipe organ with legs
The English name is a contraction of explode and loud, while the Japanese name, バクオング (Bakuong), starts from 爆, “explosion,” attached to sound: 爆音 literally means “din,” and the ending points to 音楽, music. Both halves are present in the design. The tubes coming out of its body are organ pipes, not speakers, which is why it can tune different tones to communicate instead of merely turning up the volume. It is the only evolutionary line in the series built entirely around a wind instrument.
It is also the only one whose three stages share Soundproof while doing the opposite. Whismur is frightened by its own cry, Loudred overturns trucks with its, and Exploud uses its to talk to the neighbors and bring down mountains.
The ten points of Generation VI
It was born in Generation III with 480 base stat points and 63 Special Defense. In Generation VI, that figure was raised to 73, leaving the total at the current 490, a discreet tweak that arrived alongside something much more important: Boomburst, a new move from that same generation, which finally gave it an attack worthy of what the Pokédex had been describing for ten years. Before that, the Pokémon that caused earthquakes with its voice finished with Hyper Beam, just like any other.
Who uses Boomburst better
The uncomfortable comparison is Noivern, which learns the same move with 97 Special Attack and 123 Speed. It hits first and hits from a typing that does not depend on a hidden ability to avoid running into Ghost types. Exploud wins in HP — 104 against 85 — and in the option to switch to the physical side, with Crunch available from level 1 and Earthquake through TM, but it is a trade that rarely works in its favor.
Even within its own region, it is not the most striking Normal type: Slaking distributes 670 points and has 160 Attack, though it pays for them with Truant and losing every other turn. Exploud has no such tax. It attacks every turn, with two equal offensive stats and a long TM list that includes Overheat, Shadow Ball, Surf, and Blizzard, and that is exactly where it belongs: the attacker without strange conditions that holds out long enough to use four well-chosen moveslots.
Line details
All three share the cave habitat and the blue color, and all three sharply raise Special Defense when they evolve: 23, 43, 73. Physical Defense stays at 63, barely twenty points above that of its middle form, and that is still the weak spot. Special Attack follows the same twenty-point steps — 51, 71, 91 —, a clean pattern that gives away how the line was designed all at once, with all three stages on the same drawing board.
