LATIAS is highly sensitive to the emotions of people. If it senses any hostility, this POKéMON ruffles the feathers all over its body and cries shrilly to intimidate the foe.

About Latias

Generation III introduced Latias in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire as an airborne-looking creature halfway between a dragon, a bird and a jet. Its red and white body, foldable wings and lack of legs reinforce the idea of continuous flight. The crystallised down covering its body refracts light, allowing it to change its appearance and become invisible.

It is a Dragon- and Psychic-type Eon Pokémon, associated with Latios in a pair of closely linked species. Its intelligence allows it to understand human language and communicate through telepathy. It is also highly sensitive to emotions: when faced with hostility, it spreads the feathers on its body and lets out shrieks to intimidate, while in the presence of enemies it prefers to disappear. Pokédex entries place it near water and describe it as reserved, gentle and not very willing to make contact.

Latias does not evolve and does not come from another species. Its evolutionary line ends with it, although it has an additional form: Mega Latias.

Latias in depth

A plane with bird plumage

Latias’s design starts with a silhouette reminiscent of an aircraft, then mixes in bird and dragon features. Its wings, aerodynamic body and arms, which it can fold against its torso, make it look as though it was designed to fly without stopping. Its connection to water and its ability to disappear also fit a creature that is difficult to locate, closer to an elusive animal than a territorial predator.

The Japanese name ラティアス and the English name Latias remain unchanged. The clearest etymology comes from the Latin lateō, associated with hiding, together with the feminine suffix “-as”. This reference fits the plumage that refracts light, its invisibility and its habit of moving away when it senses danger.

The red half of the Eon duo

Latias shares its category, types and concept with Latios, but its stat distribution pushes each species towards a different role. Latias focuses more on special bulk, while Latios stands out for its special offensive power. The visual difference is just as direct: red identifies Latias and blue identifies its companion.

They do not form an evolutionary line. They are two Legendary species linked by design, story and mechanics, but each occupies its own place. The fact that every Latias specimen is female further reinforces that separation within the duo.

The Mega Latias stage

Mega Evolution arrived in a generation after its debut and added Mega Latias as an alternate form. The visual change replaces the red with violet tones, adds structures to the head and alters the arrangement of the wings to give it a sturdier appearance. It retains the Dragon and Psychic types and keeps Levitate, so its immunity to Ground remains part of its identity.

The form also visually links it to Mega Latios: both look like larger, more refined versions of the same airborne concept, although Latias retains a smaller and lighter silhouette. In adventures that allow Mega Evolution, this form expands its presence beyond battle through flight over Hoenn.

How to use it in a playthrough

On a regular team, Latias works best when it comes in against Water, Fire, Grass, Electric, Fighting or Ground and forces the opponent to react. Recover lets it repeat that role, while Calm Mind turns passive turns into a real special threat. Healing Wish provides another form of utility: Latias can sacrifice its own presence to bring a weakened teammate back into battle in optimal condition.

It is best to avoid unnecessary switches against Ice, Fairy, Dark, Ghost or Dragon. Steel-type Pokémon also stop its main attacks, so Surf, Thunderbolt, Ice Beam, Aura Sphere or Earthquake help cover predictable switch-ins. Draco Meteor delivers a very powerful hit, but lowers Special Attack and requires careful planning for the following turn. Its 110 Speed helps it apply pressure, although it does not protect it from every offensive attacker.

As a point of reference within Hoenn, it shares the feel of a flying Legendary creature with Rayquaza, but Latias relies on telepathy, camouflage and support rather than brute force. Its Pokédex entries describe it as understanding human language and reacting to hostility before the attack arrives.
