Latios in depth
An aircraft with bird wings
Latios's design starts with a flying creature with no visible feet, an elongated torso and wings reminiscent of those of an aircraft. It also incorporates features of a dragon, bird and griffin. The absence of terrestrial supports fits the idea of an animal that levitates and spends much of its time in the air. Its blue colour distinguishes it from Latias, whose red colouring marks the contrast between the two members of the duo.
The aerial inspiration is not limited to its appearance. Pokédex entries insist that it folds its wings and front legs to gain speed. The result is a creature designed to cut through the air, not to fight at close range. That choice also explains the shape of its limbs and the narrow silhouette of its chest.
A name linked to the hidden
The Japanese name ラティオス is written Latios, just as it is in English and Spanish. The clearest etymology comes from the Latin lateō, “to be hidden” or “to remain concealed”, together with the masculine ending “-os”. The connection fits a species that travels between regions, avoids being seen and only approaches people it trusts.
The Eon Pokémon category connects Latios and Latias with the idea of eons, while the male and female pairing reinforces the contrast between them. Latios's blue colour, speed and more combative behaviour contrast with his partner without separating them into independent species.
From Hoenn to Mega Evolution
Latios debuted in the third generation as one of Hoenn's Legendary creatures. Its narrative role is tied to travelling between islands and the possibility of finding it far from its place of origin. The pair returned with a prominent presence in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, where aerial exploration allowed players to travel across the map on their backs.
The sixth generation added Mega Latios. The form keeps the Dragon and Psychic types and the Levitate ability, but changes the blue colour of several parts of its body to purple. It is not a permanent evolution: it is a transformation linked to battle and the Mega Evolution mechanic. Its silhouette remains very close to the original because it preserves the same idea of an aerial dragon shaped like a jet.
How to make the most of its profile
The spread of 80 HP, 90 Attack, 80 Defense, 130 Special Attack, 110 Special Defense and 110 Speed makes its role clear: switch in on an attack it resists, hit from the special side and get out before taking a serious physical hit. Levitate lets it take advantage of switches against Ground-type attacks and makes it easier to come in against opponents that rely on that type.
Dragon Pulse is a safe option when reducing Special Attack is undesirable. Psychic covers targets weak to Psychic and provides a second main attack. Ice Beam, Surf, Thunderbolt, Shadow Ball and Energy Ball expand its coverage, while Recover lets it preserve its health between exchanges. Calm Mind is useful for punishing teams that cannot pressure it immediately.
You should avoid using Psychic against a Dark-type opponent and use Dragon attacks without checking whether the opponent still has a Fairy type. Its weaknesses to Ice, Dragon, Ghost, Bug and Dark are easy to exploit. Against Garchomp or Salamence, Latios's Speed and Special Attack define its identity, but its physical defenses do not allow it to be treated as a sturdy attacker. If it comes in against a weakened opponent, its 110 Speed gives it room to finish them off before receiving a response.
