Mamoswine in depth
A mammoth born from the cold
The design combines a woolly mammoth with a wild boar. Its low silhouette, snout and tusks recall a suid, while its fur and size bring an Ice Age animal to mind. The Ice type is not there only because of the tusks: the entire species is tied to glaciation and the remains of creatures preserved beneath the ice. The Ground type fits its weight, quadrupedal body and the image of an animal that charges from the ground.
The English name joins “mammoth” with “swine”, meaning mammoth and pig or wild boar. The Japanese name, マンムー, is based on “mammoth” and adds an onomatopoeia related to a pig’s grunt. The result makes the same mixture of animals clear in both languages.
A species that returned from extinction
The Pokédex entries build a very specific story: it already existed in ancient times, survived frozen for thousands of years and then saw its population decline after the glaciation. It also appears in cave paintings from 10,000 years ago. It is not presented as a newly discovered creature, but as a prehistoric animal that has returned to a world where it was believed to have disappeared.
Its evolution reinforces that idea. Swinub represents the small, burrowing stage; Piloswine retains the woolly appearance, but still does not reach a mammoth’s scale. The final evolution condition requires Ancient Power, a move linked to the memory of ancient species. Leveling up is not enough: Piloswine must know it at that moment.
Physical power with awkward defenses
Its 130 Attack gives weight to every offensive turn. Earthquake is its most direct tool, and Icicle Crash covers targets that resist Ground or are weak to Ice. Ice Shard partially makes up for its 80 Speed, allowing it to finish off enemies that would normally act first. It can also use Knock Off to remove items or Stealth Rock to take advantage of the opponent’s switches.
Its problem is not damage, but switching in. The Ice type brings many weaknesses, while the Ground type adds only an immunity to Electric and a resistance to Poison. Water, Fighting, Fire, Grass and Steel threaten it with super effective attacks. Its 60 Special Defense increases the risk against special attackers, and 80 Defense does not turn its 110 HP into a guarantee that it can withstand repeated physical hits.
Thick Fat improves its matchups against Fire and Ice, but it is a Hidden Ability. Oblivious protects it from infatuation and Taunt, while Snow Cloak raises its Evasion during a hailstorm. In practice, the choice of Ability changes which attacks it can safely withstand.
Changes from one generation to the next
Mamoswine debuted in the fourth generation as an evolution of Piloswine, and since then its competitive identity has rested on the same foundation: very high Attack, an offensive typing combination and access to Ice-type priority. Analyses from older generations present it as a physical attacker capable of pressuring defensive teams and punishing switches with its two main types.
Over the generations, its movepool has gained tools that complete this profile. Knock Off, Stealth Rock, Iron Head, Stone Edge and High Horsepower allow it to adapt its final moveslot depending on the opponent. Power has remained its defining trait, but changes in formats and the presence of faster attackers mean that it needs support to switch in or must take advantage of a switching turn. In a normal game, its 110 HP and 130 Attack are noticeable as soon as it appears, while its 80 Speed is a reminder not to leave it exposed against just any attacker.
