Mightyena

Gen III

Bite Pokémon

Dark

Pokédex entry · Ruby

MIGHTYENA gives obvious signals when it is preparing to attack. It starts to growl deeply and then flattens its body. This POKéMON will bite savagely with its sharply pointed fangs.

About Mightyena

Thirty-seven kilos and exactly one metre tall. That is the weight and height of a real adult hyena, and the reference is obvious at a glance: grey fur, irregular black stripes along its back and legs, triangular ears and red eyes. Its build blends hyena and wolf, with a sloping back and a short muzzle full of fangs.

Pokédex entries keep returning to the same subject: the pack. They group in tens and surround prey with teamwork the entries themselves call flawless. That is where its reputation for obedience comes with a catch: used to life in a pack, it accepts orders from a Trainer it considers genuinely gifted with skills superior to the rest, and it always obeys good Trainers.

Another entry does it no favours. It says that predicting when it will attack is very easy, because it first starts growling loudly and stretches. A pack hunter that warns you before it bites.

The official category, the Bite Pokémon, sums up the whole repertoire. Poochyena reaches level 18 and the line ends there: no third stage, no Mega Evolution, no regional variants. It has only one recorded form.

Mightyena in depth

Growl plus hyena

The Japanese, グラエナ, is built from the onomatopoeia for a growl, «gura», and the word ハイエナ, hyena. English does the same thing by another route, mighty plus hyena, sharing the middle syllable. Both versions say the same thing, which is unusual for a series fond of wordplays that cannot be translated. The reference animal is the striped or brown hyena, not the spotted hyena: the dull grey and the stripes along the back point that way, over a skeleton with more wolf than African canid in it.

The Pokémon that was born special

When it came out, in Ruby and Sapphire, Dark was a special type: all its attacks used Special Attack, whatever they looked like. An animal whose only selling point is its fangs therefore bit with 60, while its 90 Attack waited for borrowed Normal moves. Crunch, with 80 power, came out weak by design. The physical–special split in Generation IV is the best thing that ever happened to the species: from one patch to the next, its signature attack started being calculated with the correct stat. Crunch also changed secondary effect, from lowering Special Defense to lowering Defense, and that finally made it fit a physical attacker. Moxie arrived later as a Hidden Ability, at last giving it a reason to stay on the field instead of merely switching in and out.

The Pokémon of the underlings

In Hoenn, it is the uniform of the grunts. Team Magma and Team Aqua use it from beginning to end, and the same happens in the anime, to the point where seeing it come out of its Poké Ball works as a narrative warning before it does as a threat. Curious detail: in Ruby and Sapphire, none can be found in the wild; it is obtained only by evolving Poochyena. Emerald corrected that and placed it on Routes 120, 121 and 123, already in the final stretch of the journey, at levels where the player’s team has normally left it behind.

The other creature on Route 101

Hoenn introduced two small mammals in the same opening grass, Poochyena and Zigzagoon. The latter won the lottery: its evolution received a Galarian form and a third stage, Obstagoon, which is Dark-type on top of that. The Poochyena line stayed exactly where it was in 2002. Compared with the other Dark-types from its own region, the gap is just as clear: Absol has a Mega Evolution, Houndoom does too, and the latter adds a second type that opens up its offensive coverage completely. Here there are 420 points, a single type and no later expansion in more than two decades.

The consolation is its movepool, which is broader than the sheet suggests: the three elemental fangs at level 1, Play Rough at 56 on a Dark-type and a collection of status tools — Taunt at 36, Yawn at 44, Swagger at 20, Scary Face at 28 — that in the hands of a patient player get in the way more than most of its attacks can hit.
