About Miltank

Gold and Silver filled Johto with farmyard wildlife, and the dairy slot in the cast went to this 1.2-metre, 75.5-kilogram pink cow. The Pokédex classifies it as the Milk Cow Pokémon and never strays from the subject in any of its entries: twenty litres a day, tastier the better the pasture, and even more nutrient-rich if it has calves. Another entry explains that anyone who cannot tolerate it switches to yoghurt. Another warns that, if you drink too much, your body will start to resemble Miltank’s. Only one entry takes it out of the cowshed, and reluctantly: most people raise it for its milk, it says, but because it is so sturdy, it can also be used for battling.

Wild specimens sometimes carry Moomoo Milk, which is exactly the product those entries describe, turned into a healing item.

It does not evolve and does not come from anything. Its 490 base stat total is all it will ever have: no previous stage to explain it, no later stage to fix it. Its design counterpart is Tauros, one hundred percent male just as Miltank is one hundred percent female, sharing its Egg Group, approximate size and nothing else.

Miltank in depth

The Goldenrod City problem

Whitney, the Gym Leader of Goldenrod City, is why half a generation of players remembers this name. Her Miltank turned Rollout into a weapon: the move appears at level 5 with 30 power, the lowest figure in its movepool, and multiplies its damage turn after turn as long as it hits. Combined with Defense Curl, which arrives at 10, the second or third hit already looks nothing like the first.

Then there was Attract. Miltank is always female, with no possible exception to its sex, so the move works against any male opponent, which in an early-game team is usually most of them. And Milk Drink, the species’ signature move in the second generation, gave back a good portion of what you had taken off it. The combination is still cited as Gold and Silver’s first real difficulty spike.

Milk and tank, nothing more

The name is not hiding anything. ミルタンク combines «milk» and «tank», and the English version is exactly the same word: milk plus a tank, which is both what it produces and what it can take. The design is a textbook dairy cow, with its four-nippled udder on display, conceived as Tauros’s female counterpart. In the illustrations, young specimens appear without horns or an udder; both develop with age.

Abilities did not exist when it debuted, so Thick Fat, Scrappy and Sap Sipper were added later. The interesting reading is that all three reinforce the same idea from different angles: Thick Fat protects the blubber, Sap Sipper digests plants and raises its Attack, and Scrappy lets it charge into things it should not be able to hit.

One hundred Speed on a cow

Compared with Blissey, Johto’s other defensive Normal type, the spread is the opposite: one handles special attacks and the other physical ones, with 105 Defense versus 70 Special Defense. Against Tauros, the difference is one of roles: Tauros exists to hit things and Miltank exists not to go down.

In a normal playthrough, it is worth taking advantage of the order in which its moves arrive. Defense Curl at 10 and Rollout at 5 can be exploited from the start just as Whitney does. Stomp at 15 and Headbutt at 25 keep it relevant through the middle stretch, while Zen Headbutt at 30 gives it a decent Psychic-type hit without touching its Special Attack, because it is physical. Heal Bell at 20 cures the whole team’s status conditions, something almost no teammate at that stage of the game can do. High Horsepower, with 95 power and Ground typing, arrives at 55, too late for almost any normal route, and by then Earthquake is already available by TM and hits harder.

The detail people overlook is Play Rough at level 45. With 90 power and Fairy typing, it is the only move in its list that answers Fighting types, and its only weakness is precisely Fighting. Without that move, any opponent with a hit of that type sorts it out in two turns, no matter how high its Defense is.
