Naclstack in depth
A pile of salt with legs
The English name combines “NaCl”, the formula for sodium chloride, with “stack”, meaning a pile or stacked set. The Japanese name, ジオヅム, is romanized as Jiodumu. The entire family revolves around salt: Nacli represents a smaller, simpler form, Naclstack adds several overlapping blocks, and Garganacl takes the idea to the point of creating a much larger salt structure.
Its brown, quadrupedal body is not meant to look like an isolated natural rock. Its silhouette reads as a small mineral pile that has gained legs and movement. The protrusions on its back reinforce the impression of accumulated pieces, while its weight of 105 kg makes it seem far from light despite measuring 0.6 m.
What changes between its forms
Naclstack first appeared directly in Generation IX and has no regional forms or alternate variants in Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet. Its design works as a growth stage: it starts as a compact block, accumulates more material and ends up as a form capable of representing a much more developed salt structure.
The evolution at level 24 comes before it learns Recover at level 30. This gives the middle form a clear stretch of usefulness during the adventure. The next evolution, at level 38, coincides with learning Stealth Rock, so the player can choose between evolving immediately or keeping a defensive form with several useful tools for a while longer.
Defense before damage
Its 100 Defense is the stat that matters most. It should not be treated as a fast attacker: its 35 Speed makes it act late, and its 35 Special Attack rules out most special moves as its main plan. Its 60 Attack is enough to take advantage of Rock Slide, Earthquake, Heavy Slam or Stone Edge, but it does not turn its turns into a constant threat.
A physical approach makes better use of its resources. Iron Defense improves its resistance to physical hits even further, and Recover allows it to stay around longer. Purifying Salt covers two problems at once: it blocks status conditions and reduces damage from Ghost-type moves. Sturdy adds protection against a hit that would otherwise weaken it instantly, as long as it remains at full health.
Stealth Rock fits well when it comes in against a physical attacker that cannot punish it with Water, Grass, Fighting, Ground or Steel. Salt Cure, Rock Slide and Earthquake cover different roles: sustained pressure, a Rock-type attack and an answer to targets vulnerable to Ground. It does not need to fill every slot with attacks; its value lies in forcing the opponent to respect its recovery and residual damage.
Its limits during a playthrough
Its 65 Special Defense does not match its Defense, so strong special attacks force it to switch out. The Rock typing does not help it preserve its health either: its weaknesses to Water, Grass, Fighting, Ground and Steel are too easy to exploit. Even with Purifying Salt, an opponent attacking from the special side can break through its defensive plan without relying on a status condition.
During the story, it works as an answer to physical opponents, users of status moves and Ghost-type Pokémon. In battles between species that have not yet completed their evolution, its combination of Recover, Iron Defense, Stealth Rock and Purifying Salt has a clear role. Against teams with fast special attackers, it loses ground and needs to be supported by well-timed switches.
