A Creature of Salt Beneath a Crust of Rock
The design is based on a rock-salt crystal embedded in layers of sedimentary rock. Its low, rounded shape also brings a mushroom to mind, although the main concept is geological. The white lower body looks like a cube of salt, while the brown surface works as a crust of dirt and stone. The glowing eyes add a detail that fits with salt lamps.
Its English and Spanish names combine NaCl, the formula for sodium chloride, with an ending that reinforces the idea of something small or salty. The Japanese Kojio contains «ko», associated with something small or a child, and «shio», salt; it also incorporates a sound connected to earth. The line was designed by Hitoshi Ariga.
The Salt It Leaves Behind
The Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet Pokédex entries present two complementary aspects. One explains that it is born in an underground layer of salt rock and that people appreciated it in the past because it shared its salt. The other focuses on the way it moves: the ground wears down its body, but Nacli produces new salt to replace what it loses. This idea justifies both its rounded edges and the salt trails it leaves as it walks.
Its evolution develops the same concept through accumulation. Naclstack looks like a structure made of overlapping layers, and Garganacl takes the image all the way to a much larger, more architectural form. Nacli is the simplest version, closest to an isolated crystal.
A Debut with No Competitive History
Nacli first appeared in the ninth generation, so it does not carry over changes to its stats, Abilities, or moves from previous generations. From its debut, it already had the set of traits that defines the line: Rock type, Purifying Salt, Sturdy, and access to Recover and Stealth Rock.
Its base stat total of 280 matches that of Roggenrola and Rockruff, among the lowest base stat totals of Rock-type species. The difference lies in the distribution: Nacli invests 75 points in Defense, but only 35 in Special Defense and 25 in Speed. This spread lets it withstand some early physical hits, but not compete with fast attackers or switch in safely against special attacks.
How to Use It Without Asking Too Much
In a regular playthrough, it is best used during the early stages as a temporary physical wall. Iron Defense improves its resilience, Recover keeps its HP up, and Stealth Rock punishes the opponent for switching. Rock Slide offers more power than Rock Throw once it becomes available, while Earthquake covers several opponents that resist the Rock type.
Purifying Salt protects against status conditions and halves the damage from Ghost-type moves, but it does not remove its elemental weaknesses. Water, Ground, Fighting, and Steel force it to switch out frequently, and its low Speed means it rarely acts before taking a hit. Clear Body and Sturdy are useful alternatives, although the former depends on the opponent attempting to lower its stats and the latter loses value when Nacli enters with reduced HP.
Evolving into Naclstack at level 24 changes little about the initial approach; the real improvement comes upon reaching Garganacl at level 38. Until then, Nacli works better as a support piece than as a primary attacker.
