Naganadel in depth
An Ultra Beast built around its stinger
Naganadel's design revolves around a wasp or flying insect with dragon-like proportions. Its elongated body, wings and stinger form a recognisable silhouette even before you focus on its colours. The most striking part is not decorative: Pokédex entries explain that its stinger secretes a toxic, shining liquid, while its body stores hundreds of litres of poison.
The result has a fairly direct reading. The Poison type appears in the liquid it produces and in the stinger; the Dragon type is reflected in its head, body and move repertoire. The name Naganadel points to a serpentine creature through “naga” and adds a reference to a needle, consistent with the pointed end of its abdomen. Its Japanese name, アーゴヨン, retains its own identity instead of translating the international name literally.
The evolution that changes its role
Poipole starts with a more modest profile. By evolving while knowing Dragon Pulse, Naganadel reaches 127 Special Attack and 121 Speed. The change is not just about gaining power: it also gains a spread that lets it attack before many opponents and take advantage of a KO to activate Beast Boost.
The evolution condition has practical value. Dragon Pulse is one of the moves it learns and is also one of the attacks that best fits its Special Attack. It is worth checking the move before levelling up; that way, you avoid delaying the evolution because you forgot it.
How to make the most of its switch-ins
The cleanest way to use it is to bring it in after a forced switch, an opposing KO or a turn in which the opponent cannot hit it with Ground, Ice, Dragon or Psychic. Dragon Pulse and Sludge Wave cover its main attacks, while Flamethrower stops Steel-type Pokémon from switching in for free. Nasty Plot requires more preparation, but turns a passive turn into a real threat.
It also has tools for playing less directly. U-turn lets it maintain momentum when the opponent sends in a known answer, and Toxic Spikes punish switches if the team is aiming for a war of attrition. Air Slash provides a Flying-type option and can be used when the target does not resist that type.
Its problem appears when it cannot secure the first KO. Beast Boost depends on defeating an opponent that turn, and its 73 HP, Defense and Special Defense leave little room for mistakes. Physical attacks are not its strong suit either: although it has access to Dragon Claw, Outrage and Gunk Shot, its 127 Special Attack makes special moves the natural basis of the set.
A design between predator and syringe
The comparison with Salazzle is useful because of the poison and the preference for Special Attack, but Naganadel takes a different approach. Salazzle relies more on its Ability and the pressure it exerts on certain targets; Naganadel has 121 Speed and an Ability that directly rewards KOs. Against Dragalge, it shares the Dragon and Poison types, although its spread prioritises Speed instead of bulk.
It first appeared in the seventh generation as Poipole's evolution and as one of the Ultra Beasts. Its presence in Sword and Shield preserves that status and keeps the same core game plan: switch in carefully, attack on the special side and look for a KO that activates Beast Boost. Its stinger stores so much poison that, despite its aerial appearance, its identity is rooted in toxicity.
