About Poipole

The grey needle protruding from its head is used to spray poison, and the side spikes also conceal small stingers. Poipole is a purple-bodied Ultra Beast: bipedal, compact, and with a thin tail ending in a spine. Its head stores a sticky poison that it sprays at its rivals while laughing loudly, according to Pokédex entries.

It comes from another world and, in its place of origin, is considered docile enough to be chosen as a travelling companion. That relationship with people contrasts with the way it attacks: it mocks its opponent and covers it in poison from its head. Its appearance resembles that of a bee larva, although the needles and poison also bring a syringe to mind.

It occupies the first spot in a very short evolutionary line. When it levels up while knowing Dragon Pulse, it evolves into Naganadel, which adds the Dragon type and retains the Poison Pin Pokémon category.

Poipole in depth

A Larva with a Needle

The design is based on a bee larva. The oversized head, small limbs, and purple body fit that early stage, while the needles turn the idea into something distinctively Ultra Beast-like. The structure also resembles a syringe: the head acts as the reservoir, and the sticky poison takes the place of the liquid. The result explains both its Poison Pin Pokémon category and its method of attacking.

The English name Poipole combines “poison” and “pole”. The reference to poison is direct; “pole” fits the spikes protruding from its body. In Japanese, it is called ベベノム (Bevenom), a combination of “bébé”, the French word for baby, and “venom”. The Japanese name highlights that it is an infant form within the evolutionary line.

An Ultra Beast Treated as a Companion

Poipole debuted in the seventh generation, in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. There, it comes from Ultra Space and is presented as a common creature in another world, to the point that its inhabitants choose it as their first companion. The two Pokédex entries offer a dual image: a beloved creature in its homeland and a taunting attacker when facing a rival.

The species returns in the eighth generation through Pokémon Sword and Shield, with access tied to Dynamax Adventures. It is not available in the ninth-generation games. Its evolution also does not follow a conventional automatic-learning line: it needs to know Dragon Pulse when it levels up. This condition connects its small-creature appearance with the arrival of Naganadel, which adds the Dragon type and takes on a much more developed silhouette.

Stats Without a Clear Speciality

The 73 points in Attack, Special Attack, and Speed form an even block, but they are not enough to define a dominant strategy. The 67 points in HP, Defense, and Special Defense are not enough to turn it into a wall either. As a result, it works better against modest targets during the adventure than against teams built for optimized battles.

A special offensive set can combine Nasty Plot with Sludge Bomb and Dragon Pulse. Venoshock takes advantage of the Poison type, and Venom Drench can lower the stats of already poisoned rivals. Beast Boost rewards a knockout, although the even distribution means the boost does not always go where it is needed most. In seventh-generation battles, it appears in Smogon's NFE tier and has no recommended moveset there.

How It Fits Alongside Other Poison Pin Pokémon

It shares its category with its evolution and with species such as Nidorino, but its origin sets it apart from Kanto's land-dwelling Pokémon. Poipole is not designed as an ordinary creature found on a route: it is an Ultra Space inhabitant that enters the adventure through a gift or a special activity.

Its practical use lies in the early stages of a playthrough, especially if you take advantage of its early access to Acid, Dragon Pulse, and Helping Hand. Later on, the lack of one clearly high stat becomes noticeable against evolved rivals. The way it is obtained and its evolution condition are its most distinctive mechanical traits: it cannot be bred, has a catch rate of 45, and needs to know a specific move to reach its next stage.
