About Oshawott

It looks like a small, harmless otter, but it carries a scalchop on its belly and uses it as a weapon. That tool also lets it cut hard Berries, so its rounded appearance hides a practical and fairly aggressive technique. Pokédex entries describe it as a fighter that attacks with its scalchop and immediately counterattacks once an offensive move ends.

Its design is based on a sea otter pup: these animals manipulate objects with their forepaws and use stones or shells to open food on their bellies. The scalchop also recalls a Japanese war fan, a reference that becomes more significant as it evolves. Oshawott represents the first stage of a line inspired by the training of a samurai. It is followed by Dewott, and the final stage is Samurott, with an appearance much closer to that of an armed commander.

As a Water-type Pokémon, it learns to fight with special moves early on, although its movepool also lets it switch to physical attacks. That mix starts to take shape with Water Gun and Razor Shell.

Oshawott in depth

A sea otter's scalchop

The design draws on a sea otter pup and the way these animals use tools to open food. The scalchop placed on its belly is not there as a simple decoration: it reproduces that posture and explains the two Pokédex entries, which present it as both a weapon and a tool for cutting Berries. It also incorporates a samurai reference through the shape of the shell, which resembles a Japanese war fan.

Its Japanese name is ミジュマル (Mijumaru). The “maru” part is a common suffix in Japanese male names and was chosen to reinforce the Japanese sound. In English, “otter” appears in Oshawott; the rest of the formation has no officially confirmed explanation.

Three ages for one line

The evolutionary line follows a deliberate progression: Oshawott is the pup still learning to handle its tool, Dewott represents the young samurai, and Samurott takes the position of the commander. The evolution retains the level 17 and 36 requirements in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, while the other starter lines in that game adjusted their levels to match them. This continuity sets the line apart within the historical adaptation of its evolutions.

Oshawott debuted in Generation V alongside Snivy and Tepig, three starter lines associated with different cultural references. Its availability was not consistent in later games: it arrived in Pokémon Legends: Arceus after not appearing in the first games of Generation VIII, and it is also part of the set of species used in Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet.

The problem with stopping halfway

In battle, it has two possible directions, but neither is particularly well developed. Its Special Attack, at 63, is only slightly higher than its Attack, while Swords Dance, Aqua Jet, Aqua Tail, and Sacred Sword support a physical variant. The result is flexible on paper and lacking in impact in practice. Its 45 Defense, 45 Special Defense, and 45 Speed make it difficult both to withstand hits and to move first.

In Generation VII Little Cup, Smogon's analyses placed it behind options such as Staryu for special attacking and Corphish for physical attacking. Even so, it retains some specific tools: Aqua Jet provides priority, Hydro Pump punishes opponents when it gets in safely, and Ice Beam covers Grass-type opponents. Torrent improves Water-type moves when its health is reduced, but relying on that state forces it to play on the edge.

How to use it during the adventure

In a normal playthrough, it is best used as a support attacker during the first half. It gets Water Gun at level 7, Water Pulse at level 23, and Aqua Tail at level 35, giving it access to both physical and special Water-type attacks without having to wait until the end of the story. Razor Shell appears at level 17, just when it evolves, and offers a stronger physical alternative to its early moves.

Swords Dance, Aqua Jet, and False Swipe serve different purposes: the first raises Attack, the second lets it finish off an opponent before a faster rival, and the third leaves the target with at least 1 HP. Hydro Pump, learned at level 43, is its most powerful special attack, although its low Speed and defenses mean that it can rarely afford prolonged exchanges.
