Regice in depth
A golem made of ancient ice
Regice’s design is based on a humanoid statue built from blocks of ice and crystals. Its angular body, pointed legs and pentagonal arms reinforce the golem concept, while its face, made up of dots, recalls the Braille writing system used in the puzzles involving the Legendary giants. The group’s shared theme links each member to a material or an era: glacial ice corresponds to Regice.
The Japanese name, レジアイス, is written almost identically to the English and Spanish names when romanised. The “ice” part refers to ice, while “regis” comes from Latin and means “of the king” or “royal”. The same root also appears in Regirock, Registeel and Regigigas, so the group retains a consistent family of names.
A specialist that lost ground
In Generation III, its Special Defense of 200 allowed it to act as an answer to special attackers and as an offensive threat with Ice- and Electric-type attacks. In that era’s competitive environment, it even saw use in OU, mainly thanks to Ice Beam, Thunderbolt, Thunder Wave and Explosion. The latter gave it a way to punish special walls that switched in confidently.
As the generations went by, the problem was not so much its special bulk as what it left uncovered. 50 Speed forces it to take hits before acting, 50 Attack limits its physical options and Ice typing offers few defensive resistances. Changes to movepools, the emergence of better walls and how easily its weaknesses could be exploited eventually pushed it into lower competitive tiers. In later generations it has been used as a special wall, a coverage-based attacker or a user of support moves, but without a stable position in the main formats.
The teammates it needs
In a normal playthrough, it switches in more comfortably against special Ice-type attacks or opponents whose movepools do not include Fire, Fighting, Rock or Steel. Ice Beam is its main attacking option; Thunderbolt covers Water- and Flying-type targets, while Thunder Wave lowers the Speed of opponents trying to take advantage of its low Speed. Amnesia strengthens its special side even further, although it leaves its physical Defense untouched.
It needs support against physical attackers and entry hazards. A teammate that resists Fire, Fighting and Steel covers a large part of the switches that force Regice out, while hazard removal gives it more opportunities to come in. Rest can provide recovery, but the sleep turns allow the opponent to gain momentum. On offensive teams, Explosion lets it trade itself for a specific threat once it has done its job.
Its place among the giants
Regirock and Registeel share the same basic concept, but each focuses its resources on a different defensive side. Regirock is associated with rock and handles certain physical attacks better; Registeel brings the Steel typing and a much broader list of resistances. Regice, by contrast, stands out for its Special Defense of 200 and its ability to attack from that same side.
The species debuted in Generation III and returned in several later generations, with entries that repeat two ideas: its body comes from an ice age and the air surrounding it reaches −200 °C. It also became obtainable again in the Galar region through its frozen ruins. Between appearances, its image barely changed; what changed was its competitive usefulness and the movepool available to it.
