Rockruff in depth
A puppy with rocks around its neck
Rockruff's design combines a spitz-type dog with imagery associated with rocky terrain. Its silhouette is that of a compact puppy, with large eyes, a short muzzle and a curled tail, but the neck breaks up that domestic appearance: a pale ruff is pierced by dark stones. The Pokédex turns this detail into part of its behaviour. It uses them to greet, intimidate and strike the ground before lunging at an opponent that retreats.
The Japanese name, Iwanko (イワンコ), combines 岩, “iwa”, rock, with “wan”, the sound of a bark, and “wanko”, a childish way of saying dog. The English name Rockruff combines “rock” with “ruff”, the sound of a bark or the fur around its neck. In both cases, the name describes the puppy without separating its canine appearance from its most visible feature.
Age changes its character
The Pokédex entries maintain one consistent idea: when young, it is friendly and quick to bond with a Trainer, but maturity brings aggression and makes it harder to raise. It does not forget the good treatment it received, even when it becomes more independent. This transition explains its place in the evolutionary line: Rockruff represents the learning stage, while Lycanroc is the form it reaches once it has learned to control its temperament.
Evolution comes at level 25, with three possible results linked to the time of day. Midday Form is obtained during the day, Midnight Form at night and Dusk Form at dusk. In Generation VII, the availability of these forms was also tied to the game version, while in later generations the line appeared in more games. The form associated with Own Tempo began as a special distribution and later became available through normal methods in subsequent games.
How it fits into a playthrough
On the early routes, it is best to make use of its physical Attack rather than trying to develop its Special Attack. Tackle and Bite cover the first battles; Rock Throw provides STAB from level 12, and Rock Tomb, learned at level 24, adds Speed control. At level 32, Rock Slide replaces Rock Throw as the main option thanks to its power of 75. Stone Edge, available at level 48, offers a 100-power hit, although its 80 accuracy makes it less reliable.
Stealth Rock is worth a moveslot if the team needs to punish the opponent's switches. Scary Face can help another team member take the initiative, and Crunch lets it deal physical damage to targets that do not take Rock attacks well. In prolonged battles, its HP and defenses are not enough to withstand many turns, so it works best by switching in on attacks it resists and leaving before it is exposed to Water, Grass, Ground, Fighting or Steel.
An unkind comparison
Compared with Lycanroc, Rockruff has lower stats and lacks the offensive pressure that defines its evolution. Compared with another puppy such as Growlithe, it offers fewer defensive resources and relies more on landing physical Rock-type attacks. Its advantage is that it learns useful moves early for progressing through the story, and that its evolution lets you choose a form according to the time of day.
It also shares an obvious problem with Roggenrola: the Rock type provides useful resistances, but it comes with several common weaknesses. Rockruff is not designed to stay in against every opponent. Its entries describe a puppy that attacks when it senses a retreat; in battle, that idea fits direct hits, well-timed switches and an early evolution better than a stalling strategy.
