Solosis in depth
A cell shaped like an organism
The design of the line revolves around cell biology. The inner sphere functions as the nucleus, the green substance as the cytoplasm, and the elements visible inside the body as organelles. The line dividing its head also resembles the cleavage furrow that appears when a cell divides. In the later stages, this idea develops from an isolated cell into a more complex form of division and grouping.
Its ability to live in the vacuum of space connects it to extremophiles and microscopic animals capable of enduring very harsh conditions, such as tardigrades. It is not a creature based on a recognisable animal, but on a cell turned into a character: small, round and protected by a liquid layer.
The name of a single cell
The English name Solosis combines “solo” with terms related to cell division, such as meiosis or mitosis. The Japanese version, ユニラン—Uniran—combines the prefix “uni-”, associated with “one”, with ran, “ovum” or “egg cell”. The concept of an isolated unit therefore appears both in the design and in the names.
From Unova to later games
Solosis debuted in the fifth generation and has kept an unbranched evolutionary line ever since: first Duosion, then Reuniclus. The natural comparison within its generation is Gothita. Both lines are parallel in structure: they share the Psychic type, evolve at level 32 and evolve again at level 41. Their final species represent opposing concepts, with the cell and fusion set against an image more closely tied to the gothic and humanoid.
Its movepool also preserves the idea of a psychic creature that needs time to act. It learns Trick Room by TM, as well as Psyshock, Psychic, Future Sight, Calm Mind and Recover. In a normal playthrough, using Recover to preserve HP and saving the evolution for level 32 is usually more useful than forcing prolonged battles with the unevolved species.
How to make the most of its twenty Speed points
In Little Cup, the clearest approach is to set up Trick Room and then attack with special moves. Magic Guard lets it switch in with less concern about indirect damage, but it does not protect it from direct hits or fix its 45 HP and its 40 and 50 defenses. Light Screen and Reflect can give it an extra turn, while Protect helps gauge the opponent’s response.
Outside Trick Room, its 20 Speed usually means it takes the hit before it can act. Bug, Dark and Ghost types are direct threats, while physical attacks punish its 30 Attack and 40 Defense particularly hard as a defensive profile. Its 105 Special Attack is the reason to use it; the rest of the set forces you to build the turn around its slowness.
