About Tadbulb

Tadbulb’s design is based on a tadpole joined to a light bulb. Its rounded body resembles a small lamp, while its tail and aquatic silhouette link it to a young amphibian. The combination fits its ability to generate electricity and the glow it produces around its head.

Its English category, “EleTadpole Pokémon”, sums up that mix of tadpole and electricity. The English name combines tadpole and bulb. In Japanese, it is known as ズピカ.

Tadbulb first appeared in Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet. It is a small, yellow, spherical species that weighs 0.4 kg. It belongs to a two-member evolutionary line: when exposed to a Thunder Stone, it becomes Bellibolt. The evolution completely changes its silhouette, but keeps the idea of an electrical organism with a lamp-like appearance.

Tadbulb in depth

A light bulb with a tadpole’s tail

The visual idea is clear from its name. Tadpole means “tadpole” and bulb means “light bulb”, two elements that appear both in its shape and its Electric type. The category “EleTadpole Pokémon” keeps that construction and presents it as an electric tadpole rather than a conventional aquatic creature. The yellow color reinforces the association with electricity, while the spherical shape makes it look more like an animated light bulb than an animal with realistic anatomy.

Its Japanese name is ズピカ. Tadbulb was introduced in Generation IX, so its history does not include design, ability, or stat changes between earlier generations. Its evolution via Thunder Stone also connects it to the tradition of Electric species that change when exposed to a source of evolutionary energy.

What it offers before evolving

With 59 Special Attack, Tadbulb has a clear offensive focus, but its 45 Speed often makes it act late. Discharge, learned at level 32, is its most powerful mid-power level-up Electric attack before Zap Cannon. Thunderbolt from a TM is a more reliable alternative, and Volt Switch lets it deal damage and switch out if the opponent does not resist Electric.

Water and Ground coverage has practical value. Water Gun is learned at level 11, Mud Shot at level 24, and Muddy Water is available through a TM and as an Egg Move. Even so, Mud Shot does not make up for its low Speed on its own, and physical attacks such as Spark make worse use of its stats than special moves.

Own Tempo, Static, and Damp

Own Tempo prevents confusion and does not depend on the opponent making contact. Static can paralyze an attacker on contact, punishing physical attackers that try to hit it directly. Damp, its Hidden Ability, prevents a Pokémon from using self-destructing moves; it has a much more specific use and does not change Tadbulb’s main problem, which is its defensive fragility.

The Electric type gives it only one weakness, Ground, but also limits its main attack against Pokémon of that type. Against Water- or Flying-type opponents, it can deal super effective damage, especially during the first half of a playthrough. Light Screen, Reflect, Thunder Wave, and Electric Terrain let it support the team, although its 35 Special Defense and 41 Defense reduce the margin for setting up several forms of support in a row.

Before it starts to resemble Bellibolt

Tadbulb shares with Mareep the idea of a small creature that channels electricity, although their evolutionary lines move forward through different visual concepts. It also recalls Wooper because of its simple aquatic-animal appearance, but Tadbulb turns that foundation into a living light bulb. Bellibolt, its evolution, abandons the tiny, round silhouette for a much larger body, so the Thunder Stone is not just a stat change: it visibly alters the line’s presence.

In a normal playthrough, it is best used as a temporary special attacker. Thunder Shock works early on; later, Discharge or Thunderbolt cover its main role, while Mud Shot helps against opponents that resist Electric attacks. Thunder Wave is useful when it needs to reduce an opponent’s Speed, while Volt Switch stops it from staying exposed for too long. It evolves when exposed to a Thunder Stone, without waiting for a specific level.
