Pokédex entry · Ruby

The bunches of fruit around TROPIUS’s neck are very popular with children. This POKéMON loves fruit, and eats it continuously. Apparently, its love for fruit resulted in its own outgrowth of fruit.

About Tropius

The leaves growing on its back function as wings, while a bunch of ripe fruit grows around its neck. Tropius combines the body of a sauropod dinosaur with features of a banana plant: a long neck, sturdy legs, broad leaves and hanging fruit. Its diet revolves around fruit, and Pokédex entries say that this preference is related to its ability to produce its own bunches.

It lives in forests and warm regions. There, it shares fruit with children, who consider it especially sweet; in Alola, the fruit is even tastier. It is also known for its generous behaviour and its close connection with tropical areas, where there are farms dedicated to raising it.

Its category is the Fruit Pokémon, and it belongs to the third generation. It is not part of an evolutionary line: it appears as an independent species, with neither a previous nor a subsequent evolution. It is 2 m tall, weighs 100 kg and is green. The Grass and Flying combination lets it move through the air with the leaves on its back while retaining a clearly plant-like appearance.

Tropius in depth

A Sauropod with Its Own Bunch

Tropius's design is based on a herbivorous sauropod dinosaur, recognisable by its long neck and quadrupedal body, combined with a tropical plant bearing large fruit. The leaves on its back replace conventional wings and explain its Flying type, while the bunch around its neck concentrates the most plant-like part of the design. WikiDex also relates it to a diplodocus and a banana plant.

Its Japanese name is トロピウス, written as Tropius. The international name is formed from “tropical” and “saurus”, an element commonly used in names linked to dinosaurs and extinct reptiles. The tropical reference fits both its habitat and the fruit it produces.

A Species Without an Evolution

Tropius first appeared in the third generation and has retained its identity as an independent species ever since. It has not received an evolution or a pre-evolution in later generations. This puts it alongside Pokémon such as Exeggutor, which also combines plant-like features with a large frame, although Exeggutor does belong to an evolutionary line.

Its presence has varied depending on the game. In the fourth generation, it was particularly associated with Pokémon Platinum, while in later generations it returned in different regions and eventually also appeared in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. In the seventh generation, the Alola entries added a specific difference: the fruit of specimens from that region is sweeter than that of those from other places.

The Sun as a Working Condition

In battle, everything revolves around Chlorophyll. With Sunny Day active, Speed stops being its biggest problem and Solar Beam becomes a direct option. The combination of Solar Beam, Air Slash and a support move such as Tailwind covers different roles, but does not remove its shortcomings: its Special Attack is 72, its Attack is 68 and its 51 Speed points mean it has to prepare the field before attacking.

Swords Dance and Dragon Dance allow it to explore its physical side. The former fits with Razor Leaf, Solar Blade and Earthquake; the latter improves two stats it needs in order not to fall behind. The cost is a lack of room for recovery or support. Synthesis helps it stay on the field, although it depends on the weather to perform at its best.

Similarities That Make the Difference

Compared with Venusaur, Tropius offers immunity to Ground and access to Flying moves, but has less offensive pressure and lower base Speed. Compared with Flygon, it shares the idea of a large body with aerial mobility, but lacks the Dragon and Ground combination, which gives Flygon a different offensive profile. Ludicolo also takes advantage of the weather, although it is better suited to rain teams.

Harvest allows strategies built around Berries and recovery, while Solar Power turns the sun into a source of damage at the cost of HP. Neither ability fixes its weakness to Ice or its fragility against Rock attacks. In a story playthrough, its HP and Grass moves help it overcome Water and Ground opponents; in demanding battles, it needs weather support, Speed control and a clear way to protect itself from those threats.
