Exeggutor

In Japanese folklore, there is a tree called the jinmenju (人面樹) that bears fruit with human faces. The fruit laughs, and after laughing so much it eventually falls from the branch. Combine that creature with a coconut palm and you get Exeggutor: a trunk with legs, a crown of leaves and three yellow heads right at the top.

The Pokédex entries all insist on the same thing. The three heads each think for themselves and reach an agreement telepathically before moving or attacking; they are friends and hardly ever argue. It is native to the tropics, and under intense sunlight it starts growing new heads. When one grows too large, it breaks off, falls to the ground and becomes an Exeggcute. In practice, the species reproduces by losing pieces of itself.

At 2 metres and 120 kilos, with that walking-grove silhouette, it earned the nickname Walking Jungle. The official category is drier: Coconut Pokémon.

It is the final form of Exeggcute, and that is where the line ends. In Alola, this same species has a regional variant with a different appearance and type, and it hatches from the same eggs.

The 125 Special Attack is what holds everything else up. The rest of the stat spread ranges from decent to poor: 95 HP, 85 Defense, 75 Special Defense and around 55 Speed, leaving it slower than almost any attacker. The 95 Attack is not merely decorative either, since it has Wood Hammer with its 120 power and Swords Dance by TM, but splitting between both offensive routes at that Speed rarely pays off.

Chlorophyll doubles its Speed while the sun is up, and that is the only way for that 55 to stop mattering. Harvest, its Hidden Ability, gives it back the Berry it just consumed, more often when the sun is active.

Defensively, the typing is a serious problem: Grass and Psychic add up to seven weaknesses, including Bug, Dark and Ghost, three types with attacks spread throughout almost every team. On offense, the pairing offers little coverage; Sludge Bomb by TM is what gives it something against Fairy-types.

Smogon places it in PU in Scarlet and Violet, with Choice Specs and raw power: Leaf Storm, at 130, Psyshock, Giga Drain and Sludge Bomb. Trick Room, also by TM, is the other possible route, because it reverses turn order and turns that 55 into an advantage.

In a normal playthrough, none of this matters. As soon as it evolves, it has Hypnosis, Leech Seed, Solar Beam and Giga Drain at Lv. 1, which are enough to get through entire routes by putting anything in the way to sleep and stealing its health. What holds it back in any format is the lack of reliable recovery beyond Synthesis, and the fact that a single Ice- or Fire-type attack forces it out.

It belongs to a single Egg Group, Grass, which limits breeding considerably compared with species that belong to two. The gender ratio is clean, 50% female, so there is no need to spend hours hunting for one that can breed. Twenty Egg cycles, which works out to about 5355 steps.

It has no Egg Moves. None: everything it knows comes through levelling up or TMs, so breeding is useful for looking for a nature, characteristics and individual values, and nothing else.

Evolution does not depend on level, friendship or time of day. Use a Leaf Stone on Exeggcute and that is it. Since Exeggutor receives almost its entire movepool all at once at Lv. 1, evolving it early does not cost it any moves; the only thing you miss is what Exeggcute would have learned later on its own.

Its habitat is the forest, and its catch rate of 45 puts it in the awkward middle ground: it is not a Legendary Pokémon, but it will not necessarily stay in the first Poké Ball either. It grows at a slow rate, the kind that takes a long time to level up, and gives 2 Special Attack EVs with 186 base experience. Its starting friendship is the usual 70.
