Volbeat

Illumise and Volbeat are the same idea split in two: they share the official category, Firefly Pokémon, and the same base stat total, 430. What they do not share is their sex, and absolutely so — there is not a single female in this species.

The starting point is a lampyrid, a firefly, with its abdomen turned into what the Pokédex entries describe without beating around the bush: its tail shines like a light bulb. It is not decoration, but a language. At night, it adjusts the intensity and rhythm of its flashes to communicate with others of its species, and when another of its kind is in front of it, it draws geometric shapes in the dark sky. It lives near clear-water ponds, in wooded areas.

Everything else the Pokédex has to say revolves around Illumise. Every entry insists on the same detail: its sweet fragrance attracts him, and that scent is what organizes his nocturnal life.

At 0.7 metres and 17.7 kilograms, it is a stocky insect — it weighs as much as a medium-sized dog. It does not come from anything or lead to anything: the evolutionary line begins and ends with him, with no prior stage, later stage, or alternate form.

The 430 points are distributed in a way that almost works. 85 Speed and 85 Special Defense are respectable figures, 75 Defense and 73 Attack are usable, and 65 HP is merely fair. Then there is 47 Special Attack, and that is where everything falls apart, because its signature move is special.

Tail Glow, learned at level 22, raises Special Attack by three stages all at once. From a base of 47. Even multiplying the resulting figure by two and a half would not scare anyone.

What keeps it from total irrelevance is Prankster, its Hidden Ability: its status moves go first. Encore locks the opponent into the wrong move before it can act, Thunder Wave leaves it slow no matter what, Rain Dance sets up rain without spending the turn, and Tailwind doubles the speed of the entire team. And Baton Pass, the piece that justifies the rest: priority Tail Glow and priority Baton Pass hand that +3 to someone who actually has the Special Attack to make use of it.

The brake is twofold. Dark types ignore status moves boosted by Prankster, so Sableye — which also has the same ability — shuts him down without breaking a sweat. And offensively, pure Bug is one of the worst types in the game: seven types resist it, and its own attacks are either special with 47 behind them (Bug Buzz, 90 power) or physical with 73 (U-turn, 70; Play Rough, 90). No number is enough.

He has no place in organized battling. In a normal playthrough, though, he works as a cheap lead that paralyzes and locks the opponent down before it can take a breath. His other two abilities are not competition: Swarm only boosts Bug-type attacks when he is low on health, and Illuminate does nothing in battle — it raises the chance of finding wild Pokémon.

The 0% female rate complicates everything. It is not that females are scarce: they do not exist. Breeding him with Illumise, the obvious partner, always produces Illumise Eggs, because the offspring comes from the mother's species. To get a Volbeat, you have to use Ditto, and from Generation V onward that pairing can return either of the two, regardless of sex.

He belongs to the Bug and Human-Like Egg Groups, a rare combination for an insect that opens up more breeding options than his appearance suggests. The 15 Egg cycles work out to about 4080 steps, on the shorter side.

He hatches with four moves: Counter, Seismic Toss, Swagger, and Roost. The two Fighting-type moves are an odd choice on a bug with 73 Attack. Swagger is the one that matters, because Prankster lets him use it before anything else.

He does not evolve. There is no level, item, friendship, or trade: no condition exists because no evolution exists, leaving him available from the moment he is caught.

His habitat is the forest. The catch rate, 150, sits in the comfortable middle of the scale — well away from the 45 of difficult catches and the 255 of anything you catch without looking, but enough for a Poké Ball to work once his HP is low. Wild specimens sometimes hold Bright Powder. He grows on the Fluctuating experience curve, and defeating him yields 1 effort point in Speed.
