Illumise

A Volbeat got a lantern put on its tail; Illumise got a perfume bottle. They are the same firefly split into two halves that fit together: identical weight, 17.7 kg, identical base experience yield, 151, and the same base stat total, 430, with only their Attack and Special Attack swapped. One hits, the other calls the shots.

All four Pokédex entries always tell the same scene, and it is an unusual one for the series: nothing is hunted here, no territory is defended, and nobody is protected. Illumise releases a sweet scent that gathers swarms of Volbeat, then guides them through the air so they trace geometric figures across the night sky. One entry puts the repertoire at two hundred different drawings. Another adds the detail that turns this into more than decoration: the more complex the pattern, the more the members of its group respect her. Prestige is measured in choreography.

It is 60 centimetres tall, and the Pokédex classifies it as the Firefly Pokémon, with a humanoid shape and a purple colour. It does not evolve into anything or come from anything: the evolutionary line has a single entry, and what you catch is what you get.

The 430-point spread makes one thing clear: 47 Attack is useless. With that, Play Rough—90 power, at level 43—hits like a little tap, and Zen Headbutt, at 33, does not justify the moveslot either. The useful part is 85 Speed, 85 Special Defense and 75 Defense: support numbers, not attacking ones. Special Attack sits at 73, so Bug Buzz, its best STAB move and the only 90-power move in the level-up list, arrives at 40 to deal modest damage.

The only thing that keeps it out of the crowd is Prankster, its Hidden Ability: status moves go before everything else. With it, Encore at level 26 locks the opponent into whatever they just used, Thunder Wave slows them down without going through Speed, and Rain Dance or Light Screen can go up on the first turn without taking the hit. Baton Pass lets it hand whatever it has built up to another Pokémon. In doubles, priority Helping Hand is a cheap way to raise its partner's damage.

The drawback is twofold. First, Dark-types ignore Prankster-boosted status moves, so half the plan falls apart against them. Second, 65 HP on a pure Bug-type—weak to Fire, Flying and Rock—does not survive a serious exchange. Its other two Abilities do little to help: Oblivious only prevents attraction and Taunt, while Tinted Lens doubles the damage of not-very-effective moves on a base Special Attack of 73. Outside a team built around Prankster, there is no reason to bring it.

Illumise belongs to the Bug and Human-Like Egg Groups, and that second membership is a textbook oddity: it is the only Bug-type in the Human-Like group. The gender ratio leaves no room for nuance, 100% female, so every breeding attempt starts with Illumise herself or a Ditto.

The 15 Egg cycles work out at roughly 4080 steps, on the shorter side. The Egg passes down three moves it does not learn by level or TM: Growth, Attract and Roost. The last one is the interesting part, because it restores half of its maximum HP and, on a Pokémon without the Flying type, has no drawback at all.

There is no evolution condition to explain. It has a single recorded form, with no items, levels or friendship involved: Illumise is born and Illumise dies.

In the wild it appears in forests, and its catch rate of 150 puts it well clear of the 45 of a starter and around halfway to trivial: a regular Poké Ball with its health lowered will usually do. Some wild specimens hold Bright Powder. Defeating it gives 1 Speed EV, and its experience group is Fluctuating, the one that levels cheaply at first and gets stuck at the end.
