Camerupt in depth
More camel than bomb
The Japanese name, バクーダ, combines 爆弾 (bakudan, bomb) with 駱駝 (rakuda, camel), and the whole creature is described there before you even see it. English does the same with less grace and more clarity: camel stuck onto erupt.
The zoological basis is a Bactrian camel, the two-humped one, and the entire evolution consists of that arithmetic. Numel is a dromedary with a single hump and a tendency to doze; the level 33 result doubles the number of humps and turns them into craters. It's one of the most literal evolutions in the game.
Omega Ruby's single crater
It received a Mega Evolution in Generation VI, in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. The visual change goes in the opposite direction to the normal evolution: the two humps merge into a single, much larger volcano, and it's active. The types don't change — it remains Fire and Ground — but the Ability becomes Sheer Force, which raises the power of all moves with secondary effects at the cost of cancelling those effects.
You can see that more clearly in its movepool than you might expect. Earth Power loses its chance to lower the opponent's Special Defense and hits harder; Fire Blast and Flamethrower lose the burn chance and hit harder; Heat Wave stops burning. What it doesn't fix is the usual problem, because Mega Evolution lowers its Speed even further. Those games also distributed Maxie's Camerupt through an event, Maxie being the leader of Team Magma.
The stretch between 33 and 46
There is an awkward gap in a normal playthrough. It evolves at 33 with Earth Power already learned at 26, but its best physical Ground move until level 46 is Bulldoze, with 60 power, learned at 12. Thirteen long levels waiting for Earthquake, and in the meantime it's better to lean on the special side: Lava Plume at 22 and Incinerate at 15 carry it through the stretch well.
The status moves it learns by level have a trick to them. Amnesia, at 19, fixes its Special Defense, which is its less-bad side. Curse, at 29, raises Attack and Defense at the cost of Speed — and with a base 40, the price is almost free, because when you're at the bottom anyway, turn order makes no difference. Yawn, at 39, handles captures and gets anything it can't break off the field. It also has Fissure in its level 1 list, and that move misses much more often than it hits.
Neither the snail nor the tortoise
Hoenn brought three slow, sturdy Fire types, and it's worth not mixing them up. Torkoal is pure Fire, with much higher Defense and no Ground coverage. Magcargo splits its typing between Fire and Rock, which adds weaknesses instead of removing them. The camel is the only one of the three that gains an immunity to Electric and hits with a type that nothing resists in combination with its own.
The price of that immunity is the steepest in the catalogue: a Swampert, or anything else with a decent Water attack, wipes it off the field before it gets to move.
