Corphish in depth
A crayfish with an invasive mindset
Corphish is based on a red crayfish, but presents it as an introduced species that eventually escapes and establishes wild populations. The Pokédex entries insist on this adaptability: it lives in dirty rivers, accepts any food and retains great vitality even in degraded environments. This is not a decorative detail. Its behaviour describes a resilient, opportunistic species that is difficult to eradicate once established.
The Japanese name ヘイガニ combines the idea of a soldier with that of a crayfish. The shape of its claws and its defiant attitude complete this military reading. “Corphish” also combines a reference to military rank or corps with crayfish.
What changed when Adaptability arrived
It appeared in Generation III with a straightforward physical profile, but during Generation IV it fell behind other physical Water attackers in Little Cup. The arrival of Adaptability as a Hidden Ability in Generation V changed how it attacked: its Water-type moves began applying much more pressure, and the Defense boost provided by Eviolite helped make up for its modest HP.
Generation VI gave it two additional tools. Aqua Jet let it finish opponents before taking a hit, and Knock Off’s power increase made removing the opposing item part of its offensive plan. Since then, Swords Dance and Dragon Dance have represented two different routes: the former breaks through sturdier teams, while the latter aims to clean once fast opponents have already been weakened.
A narrow but recognisable niche
In Little Cup, its natural competition includes other physical Water Pokémon such as Krabby, as well as species that can also set up to sweep, such as Tirtouga and Omanyte. Corphish stands apart from them through Adaptability and its combination of Knock Off and Aqua Jet. It does not always need to hit a weakened opponent with a slow move: it can save its priority for the end and use the rest of its movepool to open holes.
Its problem appears when the opponent still has a Grass-type Pokémon or an answer that resists Water. Its 35 Special Defense also does not let it take many special attacks. Faster Pokémon force it to switch, and the accumulated damage from switching in and taking hits greatly reduces its opportunities to set up Swords Dance.
How to use it without giving away turns
In a normal playthrough, it is best brought in after forcing out an opponent that is weak to Water or when the opponent has no clear answer to Knock Off. Razor Shell provides physical Water-type damage without relying on Special Attack, while Crunch covers Pokémon that resist that type. Protect is useful for scouting moves and gathering information, but spending a turn on it does not solve its lack of Speed.
If the team already has ways to weaken Grass- and Electric-type Pokémon, Corphish performs better as a mid-game attacker. If those opponents are still healthy, it is preferable to save it for a late-game clean with Aqua Jet. The Alola Pokédex mentions that many Trainers released it before finishing raising it; its ability to survive on its own explains why that decision did not reduce its presence, but instead extended it.
