Cufant in depth
Copper, trunk and name
The design combines a young elephant with a copper surface. Its trunk ends in a shovel instead of imitating a realistic trunk because its main function is to dig and pull out fragments of rock. The green patches represent copper oxidised by rain, an idea that also appears in its Pokédex entries. The result connects the animal with a metallic-looking creature without turning it into a simple statue.
The English name, Cufant, combines the chemical reference to copper with “elephant” or “infant”. The Japanese name Zōdō is based on zō, “elephant”, and dō, related to copper or a child; it also alludes to dōzō, “bronze statue”. The concept continues in its evolution, Copperajah, whose name makes the connection between copper and elephant more explicit.
A Galar species with continuity
Cufant debuted in Generation VIII and had no earlier stage in previous generations. It first appeared in Galar and returned in Paldea, where it retains the same Steel typing, the same evolutionary line and its movepool centred on physical strength, excavation and contact moves. Its move presence between games expanded through Technical Machine moves, with options such as Earthquake, Stealth Rock, Flash Cannon and Steel Beam.
Its narrative role also remains consistent: it is a docile creature used for heavy work. The entries that mention herds, caves and carrying loads complement copper’s industrial image without presenting the species as aggressive.
When size is not enough
The Steel type lets it switch into many attacks, but its base defenses of 49 and its Speed of 40 prevent it from being treated as a wall. In a normal playthrough, it works best after the team has weakened Fire-, Fighting- and Ground-type opponents. Dig is useful during the adventure for taking advantage of its Attack and protecting itself for a turn, while Iron Head and High Horsepower provide attacks that fit its best stats.
Iron Defense improves its chances against physical attackers, but it does not fix its special side. Sheer Force is usually the preferred ability, as it turns several moves with secondary effects into stronger attacks and removes those effects. Heavy Metal doubles its weight, a property linked to its copper body, but that alone does not make up for its offensive shortcomings.
The metal elephant alongside its relatives
Cufant shares the elephant concept with Donphan, although their roles are different. Donphan relies more on an earthy and defensive image, while Cufant revolves around copper, mining and industrial labour. It also differs from Phanpy through its Steel typing and the green oxidation that runs across its body.
In Sword and Shield Little Cup, it had a place as a physical attacker with defensive support, especially against Fairy-type species. There, its low Speed could be exploited under Trick Room, but it still needed teammates to cover its weaknesses. In main-story teams, its advantage lies in learning Ground- and Steel-type moves early and maintaining an Attack stat of 80 during the first half of the adventure. The rain that changes the colour of its copper is not just a visual detail: it defines how the species interacts with its surroundings.
