Gallade in depth
A swordsman with a gladiator helmet
The design combines a humanoid body with warrior features. The crest on its head is reminiscent of Roman gladiator helmets or the crested helmets worn by Greek hoplites. The blades on its elbows evoke tonfas, weapons held alongside the forearm that can be used both to strike and to protect oneself. Its fighting stances also imitate fencing, with its body ready to enter a guard and respond to its opponent.
The Japanese name, Erureido, is written エルレイド. The English name Gallade combines “gallant”, associated with chivalry, with a reference to a blade or sword. The choice fits the entries that describe it as a courteous warrior who only uses its blades when it has something to defend.
Kirlia’s male branch
Gallade appeared in Generation IV as an alternative to Gardevoir within the Ralts line. The evolution requires using a Dawn Stone on a male Kirlia, so the choice is made before reaching the final form. Gardevoir retains the special focus and Fairy typing, while Gallade changes to the Fighting type and concentrates its best stats in Attack and Special Defense.
Generation VI added Mega Gallade through the Galladite. That form reinforced its physical profile and gave it a different presence, with more elaborate blades and a kind of protective cape. In the current games, it also has Sharpness, an ability that powers up slicing moves and fits directly with Psycho Cut, Leaf Blade and Night Slash.
How to make the most of its turns
In a regular playthrough, the best time to bring it onto the field is after a teammate has forced a switch. Swords Dance takes advantage of that opening, while Psycho Cut and Sacred Sword cover its two main types. Leaf Blade is useful against Water- or Ground-type opponents, and Knock Off removes items while also punishing targets that resist its main attacks.
It is best not to leave it in against powerful physical attackers. Its 65 Defense and 68 HP mean it loses a lot of health even when it resists the move's type. Its 115 Special Defense lets it take certain special attacks better, but it does not make up for its 80 Speed against offensive teams. Support with paralysis, Sticky Web or a switching move makes it easier for it to attack first; it also appreciates coming in through a teammate that draws in Dark-type attacks, because Justified raises its Attack when it takes one.
The sword that also protects
Pokédex entries repeat two ideas: anticipation and defense. It can sense its opponents' movements, but its behavior is not limited to attacking first. It also detects when someone is in trouble and moves to help. That duality explains why it learns both Swords Dance and Close Combat, as well as Heal Pulse, Helping Hand and Wide Guard.
Its relationship with Gardevoir is not merely evolutionary. Both final forms start from Kirlia and share a base stat total of 518, although they swap their offensive priorities: Gardevoir focuses on Special Attack and Gallade on Attack. In Paldea, that difference is still visible in the moves available, where Gallade makes use of a long list of physical slicing, Fighting-type and coverage moves.
