Kirlia in depth
The aura captured on film
The name comes from Kirlian photography, the technique Semyon Kirlian popularised in the Soviet Union that records the corona discharge around an object subjected to an electric field. The result is a luminous halo that was sold for decades as the «aura» of living beings, and the step from there to a Psychic Pokémon is a short one. What stands out is that the Japanese name does not change: キルリア is read the same way as the English Kirlia, which is unusual in a series where the Japanese name is usually a different joke altogether.
The design draws on ballet without trying to hide it. The flared white torso acts as a tutu, its legs end in points and its green hair falls like a helmet. The Pokédex turns that reading into behaviour: it dances when its Trainer is happy, spinning around.
From pure Psychic to Fairy
Until the sixth generation, it was pure Psychic. The arrival of the Fairy type changed half its entry in one go. Dark stopped being 2x and became neutral, Dragon immunity appeared, and in exchange two weaknesses that had not existed before were added: Poison and Steel. The Fairy moves it now learns by level arrived with the same overhaul —Disarming Voice at level 1, Draining Kiss at 12, Charm at 28— along with the possibility of having a neutral attack against the Dark types that used to dismantle it.
The branch that arrived one generation late
The fourth generation added Gallade, and with it a fork the line did not have when it was designed. It is a rare case: a species from an earlier generation getting a new exit years later, conditioned by gender and an item. The Gardevoir branch remains the same as ever: reach level 30. The other requires using a Dawn Stone on a male, and that decision is permanent.
The practical detail is that the 50% split means checking the gender before anything else. A female Kirlia will never become Gallade, no matter how many stones you throw at it.
An intermediate stage with more moves than future
The TM list includes things Kirlia cannot use seriously. Fire Punch, Ice Punch, Thunder Punch, Zen Headbutt, Body Slam: powers of 75, 80 and 85 that run into 35 Attack. They are there because the line ends in a physical fighter, not because they help this stage.
The same goes for the end of its level-up list. Heal Pulse at 43, Dream Eater at 48 and Future Sight at 53 are moves almost nobody sees while it is still Kirlia, because evolution is available at 30. The reverse happens lower down: Hypnosis at 9 and Draining Kiss at 12 are levels before the evolution at 20, so they are learned while it is still Ralts.
It was not easy to obtain in the wild at first, either. In Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald, it does not appear on any route: the only way is to evolve Ralts. From Diamond and Pearl onwards, it can be caught directly on Sinnoh routes, and in Scarlet and Violet it appears in the East and West Provinces. It was absent from Sun and Moon and from the Let’s Go pair, two gaps that broke an otherwise continuous presence since Hoenn.
