About Kyurem

It looks like a dragon covered in ice, but its body is not protected from the cold: it freezes itself to contain the energy it produces inside. That contradiction defines Kyurem, a creature that generates such intense icy energy that any leak can freeze its cellular structure.

The Pokédex entries present it as a being waiting for the hero capable of filling the emptiness in its body with truth and ideals. That idea places it alongside Reshiram and Zekrom, although its role is not to represent either of those two forces, but the space left between them. Its grey, rigid and partially crystallised body recalls a prehistoric dragon, but Unova's history links it to an arrival from the sky and to energy close to absolute zero.

It is an independent Legendary Pokémon: it does not come from another species or lead to an evolution. Its Black Kyurem and White Kyurem forms expand that connection with Reshiram and Zekrom, but the basic form remains the one that retains emptiness and cold as its central traits.

Kyurem in depth

A body built to represent emptiness

The design combines a theropod, a European dragon and a mass of hardened ice. Its silhouette retains arms and a head reminiscent of a carnivorous dinosaur, but the plates on its body and tail give it an appearance closer to a creature that arrived from space. Its history fits that image: the cold, rock and contained energy evoke an icy celestial body.

Within Unova's trio, Kyurem represents the emptiness left between the forces associated with Reshiram and Zekrom. Its inspiration is connected to the Taoist concept of wuji, which predates the separation between yin and yang. The Japanese name キュレム is written Kyurem, just as it is in English; its shortened form also retains the shared sound structure of the trio's names.

From Unova legend to fused forms

It appeared in Generation V as a Legendary Pokémon tied to Unova's story, but its presence grew in the sequels to Pokémon Black and Pokémon White. There, it moved to the centre of the cover through its Black Kyurem and White Kyurem forms, created by fusing it with Zekrom or Reshiram using the appropriate items. The forms retain the Dragon and Ice types, but change their offensive focus and Ability.

In later generations, Freeze-Dry and Dragon Dance strengthened its attacking options. The former increases the value of its Ice-type movepool against Water targets, while the latter allows it to turn its 130 Attack into a physical threat. In Scarlet/Violet, it lost Roost, a significant setback for variants that aimed to endure hits and wear opponents down with Pressure.

The gap between Reshiram and Zekrom

Reshiram and Zekrom have more clearly defined offensive identities, linked to Fire and Electric respectively. Kyurem mixes Dragon and Ice, has 130 in both Attack and Special Attack, and retains 125 HP, so it can change roles without rebuilding the team from scratch. In exchange, its 90 Defence and Special Defence are not enough to offset five common weaknesses.

The comparison also explains why its fusions feel different. Basic Kyurem plays around the breadth of its movepool and Pressure; Black Kyurem concentrates more resources into physical damage, while White Kyurem focuses on special damage. The original form is less extreme, but it has more freedom to switch between attacks and setup.

How to get useful turns out of it

The special route is the most direct: Ice Beam or Blizzard as its main attack, Dragon Pulse or Draco Meteor for the second type, and Earth Power, Focus Blast or Flash Cannon against Steel. Freeze-Dry has its own value against Water Pokémon, while Hyper Voice keeps it from always relying on the same type of damage. If Dragon Dance is chosen, Dragon Claw, Outrage and Icicle Spear can be used to build a physical variant, although base 95 Speed still leaves many offensive opponents ahead of it.

Pressure becomes more valuable when the opponent needs to repeat moves with low PP, but it does not solve Kyurem's defensive switch-in problems. It is best brought in after a safe switch, kept away from entry hazards and saved to break a wall or clean up once faster attackers have been weakened. Steel- and Fairy-types stop several combinations of its moves, while Fighting- or Rock-type attacks force it out even when it still has plenty of health.
